How Did Draft Lottery Impact Jazz

I really doubt it's luck. They've moved up in their last 4 consecutive lotteries. League is giving them an asset to trade for AD. So they'll have Lebron + AD + FA and ESPN is happy again.

I had no idea they moved up in the lottery the past FIVE seasons. Wondering what the combined 1:? odds of that are.

? = Adam Silver

And the fact the Pelicans get the 1st overall... wouldn't be exceptionally weird on its own but with the AD drama and the Lakers moving up... that's suspect...

...assets being created out of thin air.

If I'm New Orleans, I keep AD. Jrue/Zion/AD could really end up being something special. If he's still wanting out at the deadline, then move him then.

If they do that, it could have a major impact on Free Agency.

The franchise now belongs to Zion. AD won't stand for that. Most NOLA fans have already turned on AD. For as much as it makes sense on paper to keep him, NOLA would be smart to maximize his value right now. If they wait, they might get less at the deadline.

I think...
- LA trades Ball to Chicago for #6 and other value
- then LA trades #4, #6, and some combination of Ingram, Kuzma, and Hart for AD
OR
- then NY trades #3, Dallas' 2021 1st, Knox, and maybe more for AD

If LA misses out on AD, I wouldn't be shocked to see LA go get Beal using picks and somebody like Ingram.

I actually think the way the lottery played out makes it MORE likely that AD ends up in Boston.

Knicks and Lakers both have significantly better picks than the Celtics can offer. The only way they can trump those teams is to add Tatum to the deal.

If I’m New Orleans, I flirt with the Lakers and Knicks to create a bidding war and then send him to the Celtics when they add Tatum. My guess is that the deal becomes Hayward/Tatum and picks for AD/Hill. If Randle opts out, I probably move on. If he opts in, I’m looking to maximize him and Moore in a trade at the deadline.

Jrue, Zion and Tatum are my foundation and I’ve also created a max contract slot for 2020 - and that’s even accounting for Hayward’s bloated deal for 2 more seasons.

The Lakers moved up in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019. In 2018, they didn't have their pick (Steve Nash trade, I think). The chance this happens is between 1% and 2%, something like 60:1 or 70:1.

I think the league pre-programmed the Pels and Lakers moving up, and kept the other two picks a random draw.

No tinfoil hats here. Every team gets to see what happens with the balls real time and are sequestered. I do think that shenanigans might have happened in the old days like the infamous Knicks pick, but the transparency of the process is pretty high.

Depending on who won, you could have made a storyline out of nearly everything.

I think they use a computer-based numeric system rather than ping pong balls now. And yeah, Lakers moving up 4x in a row isn't a tin-foil hat conspiracy.

AD is still gone. Who gets him has been flipped on its head. Conley will be available. Jrue probably not.

Celtics being screwed is fun !

I think that it helped the Jazz quite a bit. Both Mike Conley and Julius Randle became more likely to acquire.

It kills the non-zero chance of the Jazz getting Jrue via trade, but Conley might be more available now and Randle could be picked up in FA, although I don't want to spend all that much to get him. Hard to say what will happen to the other playoff teams in the West and if there will be any clear movers up, but I'd keep an eye on the Lakers trying to get AD again.

What the Pelicans decide to do with AD is going to be incredibly interesting. Do they roll the dice on a year of Jrue/Zion/AD? Do they flip AD for a bunch of young depth pieces from the Knicks or Lakers? Do they swing for the fence and try and get another yound 3rd guy in exchange for AD like Ben Simmons or Jayson Tatum? So many possibilities.

It's hard to believe that the Pelicans won't trade AD to the Lakers or Celtics now. Which kinda sucks. The trade packages that those teams offered the Pelicans before weren't the most enticing to them when they didn't have centerpiece. But now that they have a generational talent like Zion those offers suddenly become much more appealing. Loading the roster with a ton of young assets around Zion could make them scary in a few years.

A bit off topic but it looks as if the guy who dropped the ping pong balls in and then held the lid had blood all over his left hand. Anyone else notice that?

Pelicans and Grizzlies get the first and second picks while the Knicks and Lakers fall to 3 and 4 in a two player draft and we still have people talking about how it's rigged.

There is not a lamer take or discussion at this point.

Zach Lowe basically said as much on 1280.

Separately, if I'm NO, I jettison Davis to the highest bidder and go with something new. I just don't see AD sticking around and don't think a rookie is going to change his mind (especially since most players don't hit their full prime until their second contract).

Glad to see the Lakers catch a break, too.

Because yea, its tough for the Lakers, they didn't get the number 2 pick in the draft last season after getting it for three years in a row and had to settle with signing Lebron in the offseason. It must be really hard to be a Lakers fan, their organization deserves to finally catch a break.
Forget present day, sarcasm meters in the past and future just exploded, and any in use today vaporized. Well done.

I think they are just posturing... I mean they can't seriously want to keep AD around and have his toxic attitude infect Zion. Have the new young face of the franchise watch AD (a guy he probably looks up to) as he pouts his way out of town.

I think they are just trying to add themselves to the AD bidding to help drive up the price.

I keep reading chatter about Zion possibly returning to Duke. New rules allow him to do it, even if he doesn't sign with an agent (which he hasn't).

Also, heard national radio show guys talking that AD's "people" are saying the #1 pick changes nothing and he wants to be traded. I suspect it might have something to do with the $4 million trade kicker he gets, but maybe he just hates Fat Wednesday.

If he forces a trade, for his own sake he should make certain there is an Alpha on the team already. He is amazing and unique with many talents...but I don't think he is a top dog and believe he could wither and melt under the scrutiny of being the guy in a larger market.

Wondering what the Grizz want for Conley now. Are they going to be less greedy now that they're likely drafting a PG?
