So it's June 10, and here is my new plan of action:
MOVE #1: trade #23 and Korver to Miami for #13 and Olynyk. Draft the guy we like best between Doumboya, Hachimura and Clarke. I vote Doumboya.
RESULT: this means the end of the Derrick Favors era in Utah. Tough decision, but doing this during the draft is the quick bandaid pull. Olynyk has range, tenacity and could be a great PF/C for us. He's not the club legend Favors is, but he should be an adequate replacement with range who is scheduled to make $6 million less than Favors next season. Even with adding #13 and Olynyk, we still have near max cap space available.
MOVE #2: try to sign Tobias. If he agrees to come here (I personally don't think he will), we are a few minor moves (waive Niang, waive Neto, etc.) away from getting him his $32.7 max deal. If not Tobias, try to sign Kemba. If not Kemba, try to sign Russell. We can sign Russell without having to make any additional moves.
RESULT: I think we have a great shot of getting Russell. If he becomes an unrestricted free agent because the Nets renounce him, not many teams are lining up to give him a max. If we do, and Mitchell is part of the in person sales pitch, I think we got him. If we don't get Russell...
MOVE #3: sign Beverley. Or Rozier. Or trade for Conley. Get the best PG we can get our hands on.
RESULT: we get a SF/PF with potential who fits the long term goals of the franchise. Whether it's Hach, Doum or Clarke, I think we get a great player who is locked up for the long term. I'm also very high on Olynyk as a fit here. Ideally, we get Russell and we are set at PG for a long time. If we don't, at least we leave this summer with that good young player at SF/PF. And the last time we drafted somebody at #13, we did pretty well...
