Anyone else read that bogus article on ESPN? Might as well get rid of every small market team if he gets rid of the draft completely. No one out of college or high school would come here over LA, New York, etc.

If they did get rid of the draft, they would have to get rid of rookie deals

I don't think that LA, New York, etc are allowed to have hundreds of players in their roster.

Also, I would think these players coming out of college would want money and there would still be a salary cap and luxury tax

All I saw was he wants to get rid of the one and done college rule and that news is from last month.

I would love it if the draft was taken away. We might be able to sign someone. I’m sure there would be a three year spending cap for college kids going pro every year.

Arnovitz is fine but he’s one of these dudes that does the occasional intellectual basketball article that doesn’t make real sense. The idea is so radical it’d never be considered and that means it can never be proven wrong.
The idea that top teams wouldn’t prioritize rookies because they fill out their roster with NBA vets is flawed at best. There’s no way that the Lakers, Knicks, Nets or Clippers wouldn’t have prioritized getting Zion or Ja this offseason. Everyone wants the #1 overall pick in the lottery for a shot at that franchise player. Small market teams would be completely out of luck under this type of scenario.

You will never be able to prove him wrong...

He goes for the “what if we did this crazy thing that would be sooooo easy and is basically perfect in every way” type of idea... but really there are a thousand holes and something like this could cause serious damage to the league... it would never pass so we don’t have to worry about it.

I'm in favor of it...if the NBA also keeps the cap and makes it a bit "harder." There are too many ways to pay significantly more than the cap. The luxury tax doesnt affect GS that much, for instance, but it prohibits the Jazz from spending even IF they wanted to exceed the tax level.

Then let big market teams decide how much to overpay a guy like Zion at the expense of signing or keeping a very good veteran.

So every good player is going to go to those teams every year? Because young guys trying to make a name for themselves love playing behind other big stars.

It's a smart idea. It would help the Jazz in the long run.

This line of thought is so dumb.

When has Utah ever had the #1 pick? If this system were always in place, Utah would have better odds at landing the #1 pick than they would under the current system.

Hell when Jabari was actually considered to be a talent people wanted, Utah might have had the best odds to land him.

The only teams this hurts are the poorly run small markets, but who cares about them? Honestly, does anyone care what happens to the Suns? Get better through smart decision making and stop crying.

Also, just imagine how much this could HURT big market teams.

Lakers just star hunt. What if they decided to offer a ton of cash to Andrew Wiggins when he was a rookie? You know, that guy everyone thought was a surefire super star but he's just kind of bad?

At the end of the day, the absence of a draft gives the advantage to teams who are best at player evaluation.

It's extremely annoying how close-minded people are on this idea and how much it would help the Jazz.

Was there a draft during the Bill Russell Celtics era
How did they get so good for so long
When did NBA draft start?
Of course there were only 8 teams to start I think so talent was not diluted as much
