What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

IMO dumping Exum is kind of a pipe dream.

First, if they wanted him gone they could very easily have put him in the Conley deal and I doubt it would have been a deal breaker for the Grizzlies. To me it's obvious Jazz FO wanted him to stay

Second, because of the way the protections on the pick are structured, it makes it extremely hard to use a 1st round pick in order to dump Exum or use in a trade in general. This future pick to Memphis is pretty much tied until at least 2024 and even then it's not 100% that you will ever get it.

Those two would be the effect role players off the bench with Conley and both provide strong leadership. Exum may very well be completely inconsequential next season.

He could be inconsequential. He could also make a huge difference. But again some old vets off the bench for "leadership" can be had for vet min and be just fine. They are not making a difference between winning it all or not. Crowder is not a difference maker., we can replace him with guys we have or someone for cheap. A volume 3 point shooter who shoots below league average is not that valuable. Korver is not a difference maker anymore either. Korvers best role might be coaching after he retires anyways.

Exum could be that difference or he could be improved and be the difference in trading for another all-star level player.

It would be almost impossible for him to lower his trade value next season but he could greatly improve it, even just by being healthy.

If for some reason we could sign or trade for someone really good this offseason then go for it. That seems unlikely. Its more likely to trade for someone at the deadline or that he is healthy and can be a lock down wing defender off the bench who can run the pick and roll really well.

Besides according to you we would have to pay to dump him right now.

Thankfully I think our FO and coaching staff is pretty smart and knows what we have in him and what to do with him.

Okay but why would anyone believe that? We’re five seasons in, and Exum hasn’t done anything of substance. You talk **** on real basketball players and yet you can’t stop touching yourself over the most expensive lemon I have ever seen.

You also keep talking about Exum as throw-in salary in a trade: why would anyone want to pay the amount he’s paid that can be replaced by a G-leaguer? He is negative value to anyone but dreamers.

I still think all you people ripping Exum are wrong. I believe in him just like the FO. I believe he has proven he can be a difference maker, both on defense and getting to the hoop. So far he has been a terrible return on investment, but holding on to him is the right move. I believe he can play a few years with no major injuries, even though that hasn't been true. He can't possibly continue to be unlucky.

I stopped reading after this since I disagree with that.

He has shown at least two skills he is great at in the NBA. First is his defense. He can guard 3 positions very well and switches well.

He has also shown he can get to the rim at all elite level.

Can he add more to that? Hopefully he has shown plenty of flashes of that and was starting to do things consistently.

Oh, he has also been in the top half of pgs in the NBA as the ball handler in the pick and roll.

For the record I think the hate on Exum on this board has gone way overboard. It's kind of ridiculous to be fair. It's not like he goes out there and on purpose tears ligaments and breaks bones... He's had ****** luck throughout his career which has hampered his development. At this point he's probably missed way too much developmental time and has suffered way too much damage to ever become what he could have become had he stayed healthy, but lets hope he gets back and stays healthy, because with the pathetic depth we will have this season we will need him to provide important minutes for this team and he will almost certainly be on the team so you better get used to cheering him on.

Justin Zanik says the Jazz are going to be aggressive in free agency, but they really can't be if they only have the MLE to work with. I think there's probably another trade that's yet to go down that will open up space. I'm guessing people just can't talk about it until July.

I think what he means is - we will explore options in the 16-19M range and if we like what we can have better than Favors we might make the move. I don't think being aggressive means something outlandish like the things people here are dreaming about.

Good post. His situation is similar to Alec Burks, imo. He's a guy with upside who has had unfortunate injuries. He thrives in an up-tempo, positionless type of game, and it wouldn't take much for him to keep improving his jumper and finishing at the rim. He's already a pretty elite perimeter defender. There's not really much downside with him. If he's healthy, he fits in our 7-man rotation.

Almost every player has to deal with bigger or smaller injuries at some point in their career. Dante is just being smart getting them all out of the way early, so he can now start his 10 year run of perfect health.

I'm not sure. I think the Jazz are doing cost-benefit analysis on scenarios with Danilo Gallinari and Tobias Harris. I think the Jazz are going to have an exploratory conversation with Khris Middleton's agent. Favors' contract is clearly designed to move in a trade or to open up cap space. They'd have to move Exum as well, to open up $26M, but they could do it if they're properly motivated.
