What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

We can pick up a stretch 4 for pretty cheap. Mike Scott is a FA and shot better from 3 last year and his career than Mirotic. Plus he hustles and plays some defense. I would rather keep Favors and have Mike Scott back him up then Mirotic on similar money or even a little less. I would take Skal Labissiere on a cheap contract. He still has upside as a 3 and D PF. I still think JaMychal Green can be signed for less than Mirotic and is a better player. I would also take a chance on Alex Poythress as a backup to Favors for cheap. He played okay in Atlanta and is a FA.

Forgot to add on Niko is that I think he easily adds 17-18 ppg for us. If we were guaranteed that, would that change the calculus?

We could use a little regency bias in our government right about now, but let's just consider Conley Haywad's regency bias.
Damn, I screwed it up again. Recency bias. Got it right that time.

I like Mike Scott but vs. Niko their ability to actually score points is very, very different.

It is different, Mirotic can do more on offense. Scott is mostly a shooter and a hustle guy. Although shooting might be the most important thing from that position and Scott is better at that.

Also their ability to defend is very very very different.

That's just perfect... Nothing better than having an injured starter on a depth depleted roster decline surgery during the summer because he wants to play National team games. What could possibly go wrong?

So he would have his best season of his career? That is possible but a pretty big hope to have. He also costs us points on the other side of the court.

Does he get on the court enough with Snyder? Snyder does not like guys who dont put good effort in on defense, arent good at defense, or miss rotations on defense.

Mike Scott is a terrible defender... worse than Niko. He is a spot up shooter and nothing else.

I like Green a lot... I think if you could get Jeremy Lamb (at 12ish) and Green (at 7ish) that would be ideal, but I don't think we go that route.

He hurt it early in the season and that **** was taped all season... then we wonder why he had a down shooting year. National pride is big obvi, but I think the team should have some input here.

Oh, I'd agree (assuming Tobias is a pipe dream). I just watched a couple of his best offensive games this year: against GS and SAC. Granted these were his best games, but he showed so much more offensively than Bjelica in their head-to-head matchup. He'd very likely help raise the team's offensive rating (despite Favors's superior TS%), maybe by quite a bit. You just can't play off him (the way you might with a less talented but equally "efficient" stretch 4) with the combination of a relatively quick trigger, high usage, and high efficiency from deep.

But he was also hunted at the end of the game on defense by GS. I'm not a great evaluator, but I didn't see anything particularly wrong with his defensive approach and it seems he has the physical skills to play decent defense and is mostly attentive. Yet when GS targeted him on the P&R at the end, they scored almost every time. That scares me.

So I'm still leaning on the side of keeping Favors if it comes down to a situation where we have to pay Mirotic basically Favors's whole salary. I'm guessing that for the Jazz it may come down to what else they can get along with Mirotic if they jettison Favors.
Good breakdown and info.

I would ask, though, what the real difference is in late-game scenarios if you can’t play either Favors or Mirotic? Because we’re already there with Favors.

The Sixers will likely retain Scott.

We’re an offensively depleted team and though we just added Conley, we’ve also lost Korver and Crowder. I do think people would be pleasantly surprised if he actually played for us.

He's a shooter... not sure hustle player is accurate at all.

He has been a solid defender the last couple years. He wasnt great before then but he has been.

There is a reason he quickly became one of the fan favorites in Philly and it was for his hustle and defense. He isnt the most physically equiped defender but he is a lot like Crowder except taller and a better shooter.

Has Niko been on teams that play any semblance of d? I mean, the Bucks did last year. They were great. But Niko didn't seem to start not because of defensive woes but because of chemistry within the starting unit. Quite simply, they didn't need him and needed him more in their second unit. Other than that, the Pels blew on defense, as did Chicago. Not saying he's good by any means but maybe he's serviceable with us.

Crowder was mostly a spot up shooter and hustle guy. Mike Scott is a better spot up shooter and a hustle guy. It would be an upgrade at that position.

We do need offense. We also dont want to sacrifice and bring in poor defenders. Snyder has consistently shown he does not like players like that and does not play them.

He's a 3rd option, not really a backup. Not ideal as one anyway.

I think he is a great backup and change of pace player. He would be solid backing up Favors. We also would have Royce, Ingles, Niang, and possibly our 2nd round guy getting minutes at the 4 depending on play and matchups.
