(CNN)Technology isn't always foolproof, as about 100 Colorado drivers learned when Google Maps offered them a supposedly quick way out of a traffic jam.

A crash on Peña Boulevard, a road leading to Denver International Airport, prompted the app to take drivers on a detour on Sunday.
But it was too good to be true.
The alternate route took drivers down a dirt road that rain had turned into a muddy mess, and cars started sliding around.
Some vehicles couldn't make it through the mud, and about 100 others became trapped behind them.

At least it isn't as bad as people that have driven into lakes and such because Google Maps told them to do so.

Little House on the Prairie had a show about something like that, except Charles didn't need Google Maps to ruin his route.

Something similar to this happened to me in California a few months ago. I was driving from San Diego to San Fran and Google took me off the freeway a couple times. The first one saved me a good chunk of time avoiding some really bad construction zone on the freeway. The 2nd time it seemed similar but it led me to a dirt road that was on private property and had a gate about 1 mile on the dirt road. Maps showed the road went through and would have been faster but obviously it was closed. It was quite humorous to see 1000's of cars all trying to go down the road and turn around. Everyone looked so confused and upset. I pulled up and just asked the first car coming back what was up and then flipped around. They told me they had been trapped on the dirt road for a couple hours. It still set me back a bit.

I work in transportation and you would not believe some of the places that GPS tells drivers to go. Even worse, how many drivers following the directions blindly. I have seen full size semis end up on dirt trails not big enough for a pickup truck. Last winter there was a full size semi that went up Big Cottonwood canyon and got stuck at the S curve. Brighton and Solitude were furious as it effectively shut down traffic and nobody could get up to the resorts for several hours.

The S curve near the Lake Blanche trailhead? Lol
