Warren Buffett: I could end the deficit in 5 minutes.

It doesn't seem like you have much skill in reading comprehension or you didn't actually read what I wrote.

I agree with you last statement.

you're right, I read the first and last sentence of your post... i find reading anything else is pointless.

But the fact of the matter is a congressman with potential power, is a lot better than a congressman with no power.

Meh.

Nothing can stop corruption. No matter what you do, special interest money will always find a way into the politician's pockets.

AS far as Lee, LOL! What a joke.

Where are the jobs? Where are the great deficit reductions he promised? Where's that "revolution" he promised?

Last I checked, job market hasn't improved, deficits are still great (why didn't Lee want to give up the tax cut for he and his ilk if he was so concerned about deficits?), and things still seem to be running the same in DC (which means nothing good, that benefits the middle and lower class, is being done).

When can we get Lee out of office? He made a lot of promises, yet, I haven't seen anything done.

It's funny how people expect a millionaire lawyer who is buddies with Energy Solutions, to somehow look out for Joe Sixpack.

I would've agreed with you about this 6 months ago. Unfortunately, the more I've gotten into local politics the more I disagree with that statement, and the more I realize that the press is about as worthless as D-Cups on a rattle-snake. I've known for some time that the press was a bunch of money hungry sensationalists, but it's really getting sad. What's even sadder is that a lot of people who read the paper will take it as absolute truth, and spout off about people and things they've never met or done.

In short, there ARE some good people in politics, who refuse to give in to corruption. If you actually get to know your local government, you'd be likely to find several in each city.

Interesting.

I was going to write in my OP that we need to forget about parties and famous names, and go by what type of values and positions people have. Integrity and honesty, obviously being the top on my list.

But I figured, even then, people will fall victim to the billions that special interest with tempt.

What types of experiences do you have?

Here's a few points/experiences that I've had.

#1 First off, living in Utah County, I'm exposed to certain biases that people in other parts of the country, might not have... For example, Brother Romney is clearly the voters pick here. In my experience, no one knows what specific policies he had as governor. Some have heard of his health care thing. I believe that many would nearly have heart attacks knowing that "Romneycare" helps fund abortion. Most don't even know which state he was governor of. However, they do know he's Mormon and has an R by his name.

IMO, this is exactly what's wrong. In Utah, Jim Matheson gets along by his name alone. Had his last name been, "Troutbum" or "Thriller" he would have been destroyed by some R a long time ago. People need to get off their butts and find out what Mr. Matheson stands for. In recent times, I've seen Gov Herbert being bashed. He's a R. Yet, I don't think anyone really knows why.

Jason Chaffetz is a rockstar, yet why?

Obviously, you can find comparisons in liberal states too... Where people just go off on party or name. This is wrong...

I don't consider myself a fan of either party. Nor do I think anyone should "belong" to any particular party if we hope to have an honest government.

#2 I once had a church youth leader, who was a real good guy. He got into politics and just the city level, and was almost a little "hesitant" to express political views. He stated that he did it for the people and because he genuinely wanted to serve. Judging by the amount of service he gave me, my fam, and the religion, I believe his desire was sincere.

It has now been probably about 10 years now, and he's climbed the politics ladder. He's a member of the house in Utah, and now seems to concern himself with proving that his party is right all the time. He gives the company lines and marks up his facebook with weird blogs and radical writers. He seriously acts like his facebook is his own Glenn Beck show. He lives in free restaurants, gym memberships, and has other perks. He has now become a career politician.

The glitz and glamor of politics has gotten to him.

What was once a probably sincere desire to serve, has now become a career of gluttony and arrogance.

Interesting.

I have some views on this, but am stepping out the door. Perhaps I'll come back to this later.

back to trimming the deficit for a moment, here's one guy's idea: make all middle class (and above) kids pay $50,000 as sort of payback for everything their parents invested in them

https://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304760604576427891677779226.html

The basic argument is that by leaving our children and/or our grandchildren with enormous bills to pay, we are ripping an otherwise gleaming future right out of their pudgy little hands. This is unconscionable, we are told. This is immoral. This is not the American way.

Who are they kidding? I'm sure that I speak for many when I say that I do not mind leaving my children saddled with debt. After all, they didn't mind saddling me with it....

...Payback time, dude.

No, I do not believe it is right to saddle our children and unborn grandchildren with monstrous, crushing debt. No, I do not want to leave my kids stuck with a bill for millions of dollars. But something like 50 grand seems fair. Charge every middle-class kid 50 grand for the privilege of living in the amazing society that their parents and grandparents created, and our deficit will vanish overnight....

...You wanna live here? You wanna party here? You wanna drink all your parents' beer while they're away on vacation in some crummy motel, trying to recuperate from 50 weeks of pressing their noses to the grindstone to cover your college education?

Pony up.

this guy seems a little bitter, don't you think? maybe too much time at Chuck E. Cheese...

anyhow, more pertinent to some of the discussion in this thread, I know there's a common saying that "All politics is local" but still, there's a big difference between local politics (school boards, city councils, library boards etc) and politics at state and national levels. Seems that most of those who serve locally have that as their ultimate goal, though there are some who use it as a springboard for higher office

(Sarah Palin is a prime example, but there are certainly many others...)

and certainly at the local level, you also see those who use their office as a personal "fiefdom" of sorts and become entrenched not only in their jobs, but in the perks and power that come with their position

I really don't think Sarah had it in mind to be a VP candidate or even governor when she got involved in the PTA and then local politics. Some of the time power players look for local candidates they can press into "service" at a higher level.

That doesn't mean she's not ****ing retarded

If he really paid $140,000 on an undergraduate college education then he's a moron.

I went to one of those fancy schools (and not that long ago) and, including all student loan debt I personally took on, the total financial impact on my family was approximately 1/3rd of that amount.

I predict his solution would lead to a wave of bankruptcy filings.
