9/7-FIBA games thread

But I guess since the ball has touched the ring, it's no longer really a free throw.
If no other player touches it (for example a tip-in attempt), wouldn't it still be a free throw?

I'm not being biased because it's Rudy, but aren't FIBA rules different in that you can take the ball off the rim? Watching this closely, I think the FT bounces up, then hits the rim on the right outside portion. But, IMO, it's clearly rolling off the front of the rim when Rudy hits it. Rudy hits it downward and to his left and that causes the ball to hit the rim again. Had Rudy not hit the ball, it would have not gone in; it would have come off in front. Rudy hits it across the rim and also hits the rim with his hand. I'm not sure that's a goal tend. Is hitting the rim with a hand a violation if the ball is not in the cylinder?

You can touch the ball but not the rim. He slapped the rim so hard the whole basket was shaking.

This. Yeah, that should have been called on Rudy, but it wasn’t so congrats to France and Rudy lol! US looked decent today, I’m really looking forward to seeing how they do against a better team.

Yes, I agree he hit the rim. But the ball was already off. I don't think it was a goal tend. Was it a violation? That's my question. What is the Euro rule? Assuming the rim was hit in the process of rebounding - and not interfering with a shot - what is the rule? Maybe that's what the refs saw, as did I. The ball was already rolling off the rim when Rudy touched it. He hits it back into the rim and then on the follow through, his hand hits the rim. Had he not hit it, there was zero chance it was going to go in. I don't think he interfered with the shot itself.

USA played some good defense today, especially in the 2nd quarter when they went to that Smart, Mitchell, White, Brown line-up. Greece only scored 8 points in that quarter.

You can touch the rim, it's not interference if it doesn't affect the ball going through the rim, that portion is up to the refs to decide.

Personally I think this one was interference, but all the outrage that rim touch = interference is just wrong and a bunch of fans not understanding the rules.

I think you are reading it wrong:
31.2.4
Interference occurs:
"After a shot for a field goal or the last free throw a player touches the basket or the backboard while the ball is in contact with the ring."

Ball was in contact with the rim - thus he could not touch the basket. Obvious violation of the rule. And it was not even a gentle touch, he slapped the heck of that basket, all basket was shaking and moving.

Mitchell isn't anywhere near the best 3-point shooter on the team, but I think he is the best one-on-one defender on team USA. And the team seems to click better when he is on the floor, even if he isn't having a good game.

Mitchell looks to be the best at making reads and passing within the offense, and he's been pretty crisp on defense. I think he's rushing his 3s a little for some reason. Sometimes it seems he's not set or quite squared up.

So here are highlights from Serbia. So far, they've played Angola, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Italy. So basically, they're playing against undersized, under-skilled teams, and these wack-*** commentators go nuts over every layup and every play.
