Utah Jazz Players in the FIBA World Cup(in China)

-Donovan was the only particularly effective player on team USA, dwarfed everyone else on the team in scoring and did it efficiently
-Gobert absolutely dominated. Game-high +/- and total production by a lot.
-Joe had a very classic performance: game-high +/- in a win.

This is gonna be a sick season.

I just feel like we have the talent and the pieces fit well enough for us to win the title. These guys are fuggin competitors too... DM played the right way and didn’t force stuff... other guys kinda panicked and went into hero ball. Sounds cheesy as hell but Rudy just wants to win so bad and is willing to do all the stuff that gets the win even though it’s hard and not stuff that gets noticed. DMs defense has been much better in FIBA than during the season... Joe is Joe, can score 5-7 points in a game and be one of the key players and doesn’t give an eff if he scores 5 or 25. I just think they are willing to do what it takes.

I can’t wait for the season to start. I may find a sports book and lay some cash on the Jazz to win it all this year.

By the way:
What does it say about GOBERT - the real DPOY every year since 2015 - that the most offensively-gifted team in the world suddenly couldn't ****ing score?

He dominated them offensively too... we may not know his full value. He provides enormously efficient scoring on limited attempts but also does it without the ball. We haven’t had the personnel to completely take advantage of what he does yet... I think this is the start of mainstream NBA understanding how good he is. Seen some other articles and feel like analytics and nba experts get it.

Another narrative I’ve hated on the guy past few years is... all you have to do is spread them out and make him guard on the perimeter and you take him out the game... then they cite Curry turning him around in the playoffs 3 years ago... when he had just come back from a knee injury... or they cite the Rockets series (where the defense ain’t the problem).

Hopefully he starts getting his due respect.

I'm not asking Gobert to become Hakeem or Shaq, but I am encouraged that France seems to be cognizant of when he has a theoretical advantage in the post and that Gobert seems to be capitalizing on them. In the context of advantage basketball, Gobert being able to exploit a mismatch on a quick strike in the post exemplifies that philosophy (especially since he should be able to tip-in his own misses against guards with some reliability).

Well the data is already there when the Jazz had Ricky Rubio (a player Rudy never developed great chemistry with and clogged the lane) and a fringe stretch-4* for a two-year sample size (not to mention '16-'17**). Derrick Favors is a damn fine player, but their overlapping shortcomings were killing this team and the lineup data painted a jaw-dropping picture that I'd have to look up to give the proper figures, but I feel like it was like 10 points per 100 possessions better with Gobert and without Favors.

We're replacing Favors** (who destroyed Gobert's room), Jerebko* (who was a stiff), Crowder* (who is 6-6), Thabo* (who is ancient and not a big), and Joe Johnson** (who couldn't guard anyone) with:
Bogdanovic, Royce, Jeff Green, and Ingles. Not to mention Mike Conley instead of Ricky. Holy smokes.

A closing lineup of DM, Conley, Joe, Bojan, and Rudy gonna be a bitch to deal with for opponents... great spot up shooters, multiple ball handlers/creators, and Rudy diving to the rim.

My only concerns are...

1- I'd like another vet big... either a true PF (Trevor Booker?) or a reliable center (Noah, Bogut?). I'm hopeful we can survive on the glass playing the combo of wings at the 4, but Booker might be good to have on certain nights. If there was an injury and you told me we need to rely on Tony Bradley then I'm really worried.

2- Backup pg... I'm not hopeful on Mudiay. I understand the signing, but him combined with the uncertainty that is Dante Exum scares me. DM clearly can play backup pg, so can Joe, but then who fills into their wing minutes? Oni I think could be passable, but if Mudiay is bad and Dante is hurt we are gonna be thin. We took a flier on Nigel Williams-Goss and I think he could be okay there. The fact that there is no second year team option on Mudiay kind of bugs me since he's a project. Would be nice if the project had a little more upside.

I think there is a legit chance Bradley (like 25-30%) is cut during camp... he makes no sense on this roster at this point. Next year he makes 3.5M (if we pickup his option) and he's not better than the replacement vets who are ready made to step in and play... guys that can be had for the minimum. If Howard or Morgan show out in camp or we have an opportunity to pickup a vet at the minimum that is willing to be the third center then I think we will be tempted. I think he's a waste of a roster spot and if we were to have Rudy or Ed out for an extended period we would bring in a vet and play them over him.

Hopefully giving roster spots to Bradley and Mudiay becomes a non-factor and it is a really small quibble on my part. Much smaller issue than prior years where we were asking if our starting pg, pf, and center were good fits with each other.

I hate to say it but a lot might be riding on X this year.

As long as our top 7 are healthy come playoff time we are fine but if Dante can give us something it helps address a lot of the depth issues.

NWG could help... maybe it’s Mudiay or Oni... there’s just some minor questions there.

I think he will be so irrelevant with all additions we have that we won't be even talking much about him at the end of the year. I fully expect Mudiay to play more minutes than X.

I think his defense will drive Quin crazy.

I'm not worried a bit about our PG situation behind Conley. Mitchell is essentially our backup PG and Ingles distributes when he's in the game. What we need to find out is if Royce has developed into good backup SG.

Royce can definitely play the wing. You don't want him doing a ton of creating doe. I want to push him more the playmaking smallball 4 route though.

We can address the potential need in season if things aren't working out... and I think we can address it with a pure pg or a solid two guard and be fine.

Donovan is a scorer. He doesn't facilitate well. Unless U want your pg to shoot all the time. That's up to U. He's a sg

He’s a much better facilitator than Kemba. TF we didn’t sign him, not impressed during this tournament at all

I think this is going to be a very healthy season. I hope no one is sick.
