Rudy Gobert's Zero Low Post Game

You know it really says a lot about the state of society when people can just casually witness a cold-blooded murder and do or feel nothing. Can we at least get some thoughts and prayers up in here?
You talking about SuperHooper?

Kinda hard to have a post game when the PF hangs out in the post too. We'll see more post points from Rudy this season... I guarantee it.

No we won't, if anything it'll be less because there will be more space for rolls and dives to the hoop.

I have saw Rudy show more than zero ability to throw a jump hook.
In fact I have actually seen him make quite a few hook shots over the years. He is best at them with his left hand.

I probably just watch a lot more jazz basketball than you do though.

Lol okay buddy. I have watched every single game of his NBA career from 2014-15 on - I started watching the Jazz when Quin came on. And I’ve seen nearly all of Rudy’s games from FIBA, Euro Championships, and the Rio Olympics.

No he hasn't! Locke has consistently argued that adding more of a post-up game like this would be a net negative for Rudy and for the Jazz. It's a low percentage play in advanced metrics, which Locke worships.

Locke’s been making this point regarding the need for Rudy to develop offensively for quite some time now, on Locked on Jazz, other podcasts, and local radio. And with objective analysis, as opposed to blind homerism. This is just his latest quote (September 18th) specifically on this topic from his “The Big Show” interview on The Zone Sports Network 1280/97.5:

https://1280thezone.com/david-locke-says-jazz-will-be-as-good-as-mitchell-gobert-can-be-this-season/

Starting around the 4m20s mark: “The one thing I did think... in the US [vs. France FIBA] game, when he [Rudy] got the ball with a defender between him and the basket, he finished a few times.

“OUTSIDE 3 FEET, RUDY IS SHOOTING, Y’KNOW IN THE 30’s. AND THAT’S AN AREA OF HIS GAME THAT HAS TO CHANGE. HE’S GOT TO BE ABLE TO SCORE WHEN THERE’S A DEFENDER BETWEEN HIM AND THE BASKET AT SOME REASONABLE RATE.

“It doesn’t have to be high - it just has to be enough that if somebody switches Harrison Barnes onto him, he can take Harrison Barnes down to the paint and PUNISH THEM FOR IT...

“... Because there are not a lot of ways to defend this Jazz team. There’s one of two things that teams are gonna do (or one of three things): (1) is they’re gonna double the ball handler on the pick and roll to get the ball out of their hands and make Rudy make plays, (2) is they’re gonna switch things and Rudy’s gonna end up with who’s ever guarding MC or DM on him and he’s gonna have to be able to punish him, or (3) is they’re just gonna drop the big with the ball handler all the way to the rim, forcing the Jazz to take some floaters and those kinda shots, and Rudy’s gonna have to get creative with his ability to get himself available in those circumstances.

“And so I think y’know, that those are important plays. We saw Rudy dominate the US when they switched smaller players on him.”

Except Rudy was not dominant at all for most of this FIBA tournament (in fact in the final two games, he practically “disappeared” and was benched because he was a “total non-factor”). In the game vs the US he made a couple awkward and lucky throws at the rim. But at least he finally TRIED them (much like Ben Simmons’ at least TRYING to shoot once in a while when open despite being dominant/far more efficient driving it down the lane). You’ll never improve at anything if you never try anything even slightly outside your comfort zone - it’s pretty obvious that’s critical to any kind of player development.

Again after 6 years in the NBA and being paid hundreds of millions of dollars, Rudy’s still having NEAR-ZERO ABILITY (and just as importantly NEAR-ZERO ATTEMPTS) to make a hook shot over a guy 8 inches shorter than him (with a simple one dribble, hook from 4 ft) should be a little concerning to any Jazz fan with a shred of objectivity.

Despite all your Jazziest jizziness, my point stands. And the types of people whom you guys probably claim to revere (who crunch numbers and do NBA analysis for a living) agree.

Lol maybe you should actually listen to his show (or just other people) once in a while instead of being a jackass who thinks he knows everything. You Jazz homers are really frucking dumb and obstinate. Is this an NBA fan thing or a Utah thing? Or is it just plain American @ssh0le? Lol

Does Rudy really want to be one of the best basketball players of all time (as he repeatedly says) or just be really really good?

Do you want the Jazz to win a championship or just be really good? Sometimes I think y’all don’t know the difference between the two in the haze of homerism.

Do I want my cat to be just really good at catching mice or do I want my cat to be able to fly?

Duh! I want a flying cat.

Wow that was dumb. You just equated the Jazz winning a championship (or Rudy being a top all-time player) to a flying cat, i.e., not the improbable yet reachable, but rather the absurd and farcical. What a “good” Jazz fan you are lol

Well I guess I can still appreciate your knowledgeable perspective on American imperialism in the Middle East, specifically regarding Mosaddegh and Iran.

It seems that you are saying that if rudy just worked on his post game then the jazz would win championships and rudy would be one of the best players of all time.
So since he hasn’t worked on his post game over the years it would also seem like you are saying that rudy doesn’t want to win championships and doesn’t want to be one of the best players of all time.

Wow what a dumb thing to say.

I heard him talking about how much a Rudy post move would help him just like 3 days ago on 97.5. I swear on my life. I was actually going to post here about it but I forgot.

Edit: SuperHooper already posted it.

Good post. I appreciate to research effort to back up your point. I think that Locke wasnt talking about Rudy developing his back to the basket game but adding a 5-10 foot shot that he can make at a consistant clip. That way he can punish drop bigs gaurding against his lob threat when our three ball goes cold.

Rudy is already great and I am pretty sure he gives 100 percent effort to become even better. You sound so disappointed about him.. I would understand if you were talking like that about Exum but not our best player. And if you worry about championship I think it will mostly depend on Mitchell's development.

Wow you are so full of shhite and you know it. But please tell me approximately how many hook shots in total you’ve seen Rudy make, or take? Total career or per season, however you’d like lol.

Oh is that what a said? That if Rudy just works on his post game, he’d be an all-time great or the Jazz would win a chip? Please don’t twist my point into insanity. As Locke mentioned it’s just a necessary step to go further, no more no less. That’s called player and development and improvement d1ckw@d. And yes that’s part of the road to a chip. That alone doesn’t solve anything lol

Please watch the the entirety of his performances in FIBA this year and tell me what aspect of his game on offense has he clearly worked on and improved? When he gets a post opportunity in the paint against any kind of defender (big or small) he looks just as clueless as he was in 2014. I love the guy and I know he works his @ss off in other areas, but he’s not showing it when he’s got even a 6’7” guy switched onto him four feet from the hoop. At least when it’s game time, and that’s the point.
