He was last year and missed ~20 games, so I’m not sure why that would disqualify him this year.I’m less sure. I think it’s a valid question.

I’m not sure anyone would be calling him the best right now if he hadn’t (a) hit that shot against the 76ers, and (b) ran into a gutted Warriors team.He was last year and missed ~20 games, so I’m not sure why that would disqualify him this year.
All I know is that Kawhi Leonard has been the death blow to the two best super teams of the last decade, winning finals MVPs in the process. I don’t know how you argue against that, so I’m not.I’m not sure anyone would be calling him the best right now if he hadn’t (a) hit that shot against the 76ers, and (b) ran into a gutted Warriors team.
Two low-probability events don’t make someone case-closed better than Giannis or LeBron.... especially when you need steady load management while your team carries you to the big stage.

Toronto got damn lucky last year.
Also, Toronto was in the East. The clippers however are not.

What about the year when “Kawhi’s Spurs” yipped away the finals victory against the heat after they were already rolling the trophy down the tunnel? All I know is that Kawhi Leonard has been the death blow to the two best super teams of the last decade, winning finals MVPs in the process. If we want to dig further, neither of those rings came on superteams of his own. The Bucks had more firepower (or at least more players in their prime and contributing as such) and flat-out should’ve won. They didn’t. The Sixers COULD have won, they didn’t. The Warriors played demonstrably better without Durant (not to mention that they were historically great before adding him), they could’ve put Toronto away before game 6, they didn’t.
Lastly, LeBron doesn’t play defense and Giannis couldn’t beat Kawhi because he flat-out wasn’t as good at basketball as Kawhi. Giannis has said as much.
He’s the best player in the league until someone takes that title or he’s out for the year.
