Jazz Are 4th in Defensive Rebounding Percentage

https://stats.nba.com/teams/defense/?sort=DREB_PCT&dir=-1

Just bringing it up cuz a lot of pissy babies on this site were pooping and peeing their pants about how the Jazz couldnt rebound.
I don’t think it’s a composite rebounding issue. I think it’s the fact that we lack guys who are natural rebounders so when a rebound needs to be secured down the stretch, we’re more likely to give it up than our averages would lead us to believe. It’s been an issue for us for a while, though, because we didn’t close with Gobert/Favors the past couple years and there have been more than a few games we lost by not being able to secure a rebound in the final minute. A big example was that OKC playoff game. Luckily we were able to walk away with that, though.

That said, we may still struggle with this in the playoffs, but unless we get a better player on the floor than Joe/Royce who can also rebound well, that’s the hand we’re dealt and the hand we’ll have to play.

It was relevant to talk about the poor rebounding when it was actually poor. It cost us two wins. Haven't heard anyone say it was poor recently. Dumb post.

Don and Mike have been great as rebounding guards since the two game debacle. The whole team has. Even uncle Jeff.

You are correct in that the Jazz currently rank 15th in defensive rebounding percentage in "clutch" minutes, but that's a small sample size.

this. i do worry about a series with the clips and montrezl harrell coming off the bench having a field day on the offensive glass. I do feel we need a sort of harrell type energy big. I guess that's sort of ed davis. but could we use another big like that sure.

Last year it was 25th
24th two yeas prior
5th three years ago
28th four years ago
I’d say that’d indicate a significant trend. Three years ago was when we were closing with Favors and he played 81 games. The year before that both Favors and Gobert played 62 and 61 games, respectively, and I think there wasn’t much overlap in the games they missed, if I recall correctly. The past two years we closed with Crowder or others. Guys who aren’t really even passable rebounders at the 4. This means that in crunch time Gobert is typically going more out to more highly contest any shot, which leaves the offensive bird up for grabs against a hustle player, who were always the ones who hurt us. This doesn’t matter as much during the length of the game, just like you don’t full court press all 48. But when it’s down to the wire the hustlers are going to have an easier time securing offensive rebounds because they just need to overcome subpar defensive rebounders.

If we’re at 15th now then I hope that continues. But in reality we’re about the same, or worse. There’s not an easy solution to that because, obviously, you’d have to have a guy who’s better than Royce or Ingles to close games with. Morris is my pipe dream. He’s not an amazing rebounder, though, and his presence means you’re sitting both Ingles and Royce, but at least having that luxury would be nice.

One reason that I think Love would have actually provided more value than people though. His boards would compensate for defensive issues.

Even full seasons are limited sample size for clutch minutes

And his boards would not compensate for his defensive issues. C'mon.
