The Conley Conundrum

We are almost half way into the season so how many samples do you need? There is no sign of Conley coming back within the next 2 weeks so thats probably all the data we can work with at midpoint of the season.

I at least have a sample to support my claim, do you have anything besides wishful thinking?
The last two years the team has performed better with Mitchell next to another strong starting caliber PG.

How does being slightly smaller at two positions mean you can't have a small PG?
Agreed. We should try to field the smallest team in the league. My mistake.

You know the Jazz have Rudy Gobert. They are in no danger of being considered small
Agreed. We should try to create a lineup with Conley at point, Mitchell at shooting guard, neto at small forward, mudiay at power forward and gobert at center.

Jazz won't trade him this year.

He will be the difference maker in playoffs. Without him playing at the highest level, we won't win it all. Let's hope he delievers.

I think a lot of you are banking on us getting the Conley who scores 15+ and shoots 40+ percent. Not the one we got who’s near career lows in both. But what if being second fiddle to Mitchell and just being older means we get low scoring and crappy shooting Conley instead of Memphis Grizzlies Conley? Are we still fine with a 30 million dollar guard who’s scoring less and shooting 5+ percentage pts worse than Rubio currently is?

hmmmm.

Like compare their stats right now. As much as we’re laughing about the Exum deal, the same could be said about our deal for Conley. Rubio is currently scoring more pts and shooting significantly better than Conley right now.

Btw, Rubio had 18 pts and 13 asts against the Blazers last night. If Conley ever did that for us I’m sure this board would be ecstatic.

My point isn’t to say we should’ve stuck with rubio. My point is emphasizing how many of you have lowered the bar for a player who was touted as being Mitchell’s sidekick. Oh, and he’s being paid $30 million and cost us several players and picks. Stuff that could’ve been used for better deals.

We literally were getting this Conley before he started having problems with his hamstrings. Over a 10 game stretch he averaged 17.7 points, 4.4 assists, with a .548 true shooting percentage. He then had a couple of quiet games where he distributed more and Bogdanovic took over the scoring load ( 27 points followed by b2b 30+ points nights), Conley then had 20 against Toronto then hurt his hamstring against Philly. Over this same stretch of play he had a 4:1 turnover ratio which funnily enough was only bettered by Rubio among starting PG's.

You can compare Conley and Rubio stats and you see that they're quiet similar, key differences being assist numbers which can largely be accounted for based on the difference in system and the other difference being three point percentage. Rubio shot very well in November (.385) but has shot (.273) for December which is the Rubio everyone knows, especially his opponents. You can then compare his shooting percentage to Conley who is shooting 40% from 3 since the 5th game of the season which is the Conley opponents know and know not to leave open. Come playoffs that is going to make a big difference.

I think that the last two years with favors and Rubio in the starting lineup we lacked shooting and scoring so much that the jazz just got desperate for a scoring threat so they overlooked the fact that Conley was undersized, overpaid, injury prone, old, kinda average for his career, had his best season when his team had their worst, and would require a bunch of assets to attain him.

Their jobs are so different though. JC made a couple nice passes to Rudy but he’s basically shot hunting out of the pick and roll... Mike is more of a connector and running the offense. He hasn’t been great at it and has been in a shooting slump. Once his shot comes around I think he improves but I don’t see him being an awesome connector at this point... better than he has been for sure but not what I had hoped for.

If we had a do over I think we figure out a way to make sure DM is the smallest player in the starting lineup and having Ingles or a bigger creator alongside him. Don’t need a true creator pg imo... but DM isn’t a full time of type. I just think we are too small with Conley against the LA teams and he isn’t good enough anymore to make them pay on the other end. The trade could be a colossal fail but it made sense at the time so I won’t kill it... in hindsight we might have been able to land Bojan and Brogdon and we’d be much closer to contention and set up a little better going forward.

I still think some sort of three team CP, Conley, deal would make sense and there has been some smoke there from Tim McMahon on various podcasts. I think we can be really good if CP needs to sit but he’s a guy that raises our ceiling for the next two years... that third year sucks... like bad... but he might be able to be good well into his mid 30s like John and Steve Nash were because he’s a basketball genius and he’s strong AF.
I'd trade Conley for brogdon in a heartbeat.
