Jazz @ Rockets 5:00 PM MT Game Thread

There is no luck in Clarkson and Conley having good games against the Rockets switching defense. Joe has always struggled against it. Rudy doesn't punish small players. Jordan was incredible in beating his más off the dribble and getting all the way to the rim (Rockets have no rim protection now). Conley did the same. Both were very capable in attacking the switch. Donovan was more effective once Harden got into foul trouble. Again, Jordan and to a lesser degree Conley having good games was no luck but part of the game plan.
I didn't say it was lucky they were good. I said the team was lucky to win. The Rockets got killed by the freaking suns like 3 days ago and we had to make a fading 3 to beat them. Get your head out of the sand and realize this team is flawed with Conley starting.

Hmmm. Well, I disagree with Clarkson on this one. We needed him for at least 4 more possessions. The possessions that Conley used weren’t awesome.
But Conley is getting more points and other stats, and he's only pulling down a few of our other players to do it. He's awesome. He was needed to counter small ball. He dribbles pretty good. He just needs some more time to gel. We can only win a game like this with Conley. He was almost an all-star a year ago. He's the secret to a championship. Etc. Etc.

I don’t know what this says, but I agree:

So after watching the replay and everyone's reaction, I like the view from the other basket where you see the reaction on Joe's face. After he inbounds it and Bojan goes up for the shot, Joe extends his arm to the ref and starts to look over in disbelief that he got fouled, then it drops and his reaction changes to "oh it doesn't matter!"

It did look like he got fouled.
I just watched the highlights this morning. What an amazing shot

I want to see the percentage of possessions used by Conley skew heavily in favor of the corner 3. Like, now.

Whenever he’s the primary instigator, it should be when he’s with the second unit.

I understand that, to Q, this is defaulting. I understand the feeling that we need to try to unlock more. But goddamn, I’m not seeing any signs that it’s going to happen and it’s ****ing crazy that we’re shifting away from one of the league’s best lineups.

But we were not lucky to win. Maybe it's you the one who needs to get his head out of the sand. Stop your negative narrative on Conley. Last night we were finally able to crack Houston switch defense thanks to Clarkson and Conley. Watch closely how they scored. They found a mismatch and it took them half a second to attack off the dribble in order to keep the advantage and deny the switch. That oftentimes took two Rockets defenders out of the play (the one defending and the one who was supposed to switch). That led to either a layup or a corner 3. Sorry but as much as I love Joe, he hasn't been effective against the Rockets. Rudy's/Joe pick and roll is not effective either. It only works when the big man slips the screen before the switch. They tried a couple of times but the Rockets were pretty good at rotating someone over and intercepting the pass.

Big long term question: even if Joe production declines a bit with Conley, does it really matter if Conley start averaging, let's say, 18ppg on 45fg%? Besides individual stats, what evidence do you have that the team is worse with a good Conley? Does it really matter where the points come from as long as they are high percentage shoots?

Are we sure that we should’ve traded for Clarkson? Maybe we gave up on Exum too quickly? After all, I heard he played good defense on Harden 3 years ago and one time he scored 15 pts for the Cavs.
I know this is sarcasm... but just wanted to point something out... Dante is no longer in the rotation for Cleveland... just think about that for a minute.

He may not be in the rotation, but that doesn't mean his $10M isn't still on the books for next year.

Why are you still talking about Exum? He's gone, almost everybody agrees it was a good deal for the Jazz. Get over it.

Did Cleveland give up on him too early? After all, Exum was drafted #5 and played good defense that one time on Harden. Besides, is Clarkson really that great? He still hasn’t beaten Kareem’s scoring total.

No I got it. Why bother? You mention him a lot still.

Ive mentioned him 14 times counting the day he was traded in mid December. Most of those posts were in the traded thread and in the thread where a poster brought up his one good game as a Cav. That’s “a lot” to you?

I brought him up today because clarkson was the best player on the court again and has performed admirably. And to think we got him for Exum? What a steal!
