What's new

Jordan Clarkson Extension

I don't know the details about his contract but does he become a restricted or unrestricted free agent after the season?

He'll probably ask what Bojan is making.

Royce just got $9 per year (4 years $36 million)

Exum got $9.6 per year plus incentives

Lou Williams makes $8 per year

Marcus Smart got around $12.5 per year

Dinwiddie makes around $11 per year

His last contract, from the Lakers...., was $12.5 per year (4 years $50 million).

I think if we gave him a contract making about $12-12.5 per year, it would be fair for both him and us. He is 27 squarely in his prime. Something like...
4 years $48 million all guaranteed
3 years $40 million
4 years $50 million (4th year team option)

It would be interesting to know who we would be competing against for his services. Where else does he fit and play this much? It's a weak free agency year so he could cost more than usual.

A better question is how many teams will even have money.

Very good question. https://www.forbes.com/sites/bryant...summer-of-salary-cap-exceptions/#c73143bf0ee4

Five teams projected to have cap space this summer:
Atlanta: 49.21M
New York: 38.76M
Detroit: 34.86M
Miami: 26.50M
Charlotte: 22.81M

Those are the only 5 teams in the entire league who can give more than $9.75 million. Miami will not want to tie up 2021 money because they want target a max guy.

So, would Clarkson want to sign for Atlanta, New York, Detroit or Charlotte over coming back to what seems to be a good fit? I think we could try to sign Clarkson to $11 maybe $12 per year over 4 years and guarantee it all. That's likely more than he would get in the free agent market unless he wants to go to a trash team for a little more money.

I don’t know that any of those teams would sign him to more than MLE money. Most would have other needs and want a slightly younger player.

I think JC has played himself around the MLE market so 4/43... I’d try and get him at 4/40 and with likely incentives give him another 3-5M. Games played and **** like that.

I don’t think his market gets super frothy. We should keep him at any reasonable cost. It’d be nice to get something done now and get a small discount... can focus our free agent attention elsewhere.

I agree. I don't want to low ball him, but I also don't want to overpay. I hesitate on giving him Ingles money if we don't have to. A fully guaranteed 4 years $48 million would seem to be great for us long term and great for him at least next year.

He'll probably want more than he is currently making. you will probably need 14 to 15 million. He's worth it.

That doesn’t factor in though... like you should just get the market rate and 15M is over what his market should be...

All a complicated discussion of value. I don't think we can low ball him and only give him half a million more than any team with the full $9.75 million exception can give him. I also don't think we should outbid ourselves (cough Conley cough).

It would be an interesting development if we signed Clarkson to a bigger than expected number and then in the summer his contract becomes part of the rationale for trading Conley. The front office would have all the reasons to explain moving on from Conley because we have invested in Royce, Clarkson, Ingles and Bojan while also recognizing that we soon have to give new contracts to Rudy and Donovan.

You did a good job laying out the comps in an earlier post. I think JC has some self awareness... seems to know his job... the let them rock comment the other night is great. I think he's been in some ****** situations in Cleveland and the LOLakers. I think he likes to ball and wants to be with a winner in a role he is appreciated in. That said...

If you come to him offering him more than Lou Will is making on a longer deal... slightly more than MLE (with incentives) I think that is absolutely fair. Takes the risk of injury off of his back. I thin 4/50M is his ceiling... and he'd have to get that from a bottom feeder. 4/40M guaranteed plus $4-5M in incentives is kind of a sweet spot I think to get something done now. Anything less than that is a bargain, but getting him for 5-10M less over the life of the contract isn't going to materially change the books for us. Want to make his deal as valuable as possible.

Once you lock him in you know how you need to budget for free agency. We are likely very close to the tax if we use full MLE... need to move Davis or TB to avoid the tax is my guess. I think that is very doable... might even work them into a sign and trade with the player you want and preserve the exceptions. Like say NY doesn't want to keep Dotson and will take Ed on a one year deal... could do Dotson on a 4/16M and do a sign and trade. Send them a second for their trouble.

I love JC's fit btw. He's fun to watch even when he is just out there chucking. Some guys neuter their nba skill by trying to be too well rounded. I like that he leans in and just gets ****ing buckets. He does it different than Mudiay... in a way that feels more reliable and I trust his shot more.

That little half hook after he drives and stops is awesome for a guard... put it right in Zingers mouth last night... went up and over fuggin 7 footer as a guard... no momentum just here take this bucket in yo moufhole.

I dog on the front office for some of they ****... they nailed this one and we got a future core/rotation piece. He's just cool as hell too with his ugly hairline and tons of tattoos.

That would be the perfect scenario. If we got him for around $11 per year....

Bojan around $17.9, $18.7, $19.6
Ingles $10.9, $13
Clarkson $11, $11, $11, $11
Royce $8.5, $8.8, $9.2, $9.5
TOTAL: Roughly $50 million a year for what should be 4 of our main rotation of 7 or 8 guys.

Salary cap next year is $118 with a luxury limit of $143. Considering Chris Paul and John Wall cost over $40 million by themselves, $50 million for those 4 is good business.

We need to trade our draft pick during the draft this year. I wonder what we could land with a salary combo of Davis, Bradley, or Niang plus the pick.

Depends of course... I actually kind of like some of the types of players that are available around where we are picking. This draft is considered bad and the picks weren't valuable at the trade deadline, so I wonder if they are worth more or less on draft night... usually they are worth less unless there is a guy someone really wants. I would try and do a deal where we move Davis into someone's space, pick someone they want and get a future first in return for deferring the pick... kind of like Boston did last draft. That's pretty specific so I'm not sure that is possible.

I think we can get what we need in FA with the MLE and BAE if we want. I might want to put a future first in my pocket for a trade deadline deal. We need to see what we have in Morgan, Brantley... I don't think Oni or Tucker get any run at all this year. We need to see what we have in some of these projects before adding more to the pile... NWG I'm fine waiving. I like JWF... maybe we give him a spot and put him in the JFC School of Buckets.

If we could trade Ed and pick for a future pick then that’s great. Restock those assets.
