What's new

What's the Deal with Rayjohn Tucker?

He's not playing for two reasons -

- Once again there's zero margin for error in the WC. Jazz are a win-now team that need to win every game. The days of working players into the line-up are over (see Dante Exum for the past 5 years).

- Jordan Clarkson's integration into the team has been a spectacular success. When they traded for him I don't think even QS or DL imagined he'd be this valuable this fast. And not just as an instant offense guy. He's bought into the team's defensive identity as well.

He was already playing great at the G league level so I guess right now even just participating in practices with the Jazz team can be more valuable for him than playing with the Stars. And he will see the floor in the garbage time or in case of multiple injuries.

I’d be rooting for him to play if his shot wasn’t so crooked in the minutes he has played. Too bad. The dude has a beast of a body, and could be switchable af.

He hasn't really had many chances to really show what he can do offensively. When he is on the court, he barely if at all sees the ball.

This makes sense but why aren't they giving him Stars time if he is just going to sit? If he is a future prospect he needs some developmental playing time, not sit on the shelf in bubble wrap time.

He already dominated G-League - sending him back down may result in negative returns.

Also, there was a bidding war for this kid - Jazz FO may have agreed (verbally) to keep him on the active roster. Once again, they probably didn't figure on Clarkson being this good, so this was an easy promise to make.

But the reality is, as it turns out, there is no justification for giving RJT one minute of Clarkson's time at this point..

His time is next season. I am absolutely of the opinion that playing basketball to some degree is beneficial. He should spend most of his team with this staff in this environment, but doing a few stints with the Stars would also be good.

As far as playing more on the Jazz THIS year? No way in hell. He got a shot and he didn’t show that he is deserving of minutes. The Jazz are log-jammed with guards as it is. All that being said, there’s reason for hope, I think he needs to get comfortable, confident, and work with the staff. Playing is part of maintaining that comfort and confidence, in addition to working on the wrinkles in his game IN game.

I think I just crushed HH’s world

Huh... I think G League is fine in limited samples, but most of these guys need to play a role and will be low usage types. Juwan can play the role he was for the Stars as a backup center in the NBA. I think too long down there and guys might develop bad habits or get used to being high usage players. Specifically wings and ball handlers... they will need to fit much more. JWF might be okay because the idea with him is he will be a spark plug, high usage, guard off the bench... like JC is. Doubt he gets anywhere near that level, but that's the idea.

I think the perfect example is Jimmer... dude can get buckets in G League and China when everything runs through him... in the league he's trash because he sucks at defense, but also because he isn't going to handle the ball that much.

G League is fine in small doses... get Brantley and Morgan up playing some with the big boys.

So some but not much of a developmental league. Ya, HH still crushed

But the guy was in college last year and if he's going to sit, there aren't that many bad habits to develop down on the farm since the Stars are running the Jazz system. Perhaps he's the next Ian Clark.

Shouldn’t we at least be able to spell Rayjon’s name correctly?

He’s an athletic wing/guard in the mold of Simmons or Bazemore. The jump from G-League to NBA bench is steep. He’ll have a whole offseason with the Jazz to prove he should stick around long-term.

Utah would have to be doing really poorly to justify giving him extended minutes.
