Cougars 2011-12 Football Discussion

Ya, loved the safeties coming up and hitting but very worried about coverage. Texas is in a similar situation with new coordinators but better talent. They had some youngsters do pretty well against Rice. Probably come down to who makes the least mistakes versus either team just deciding to win the thing.

They have a lot of deep threats too. No question that the Eason/Uale combo is going to get burned long a couple of times. In a way, I hope so because I think their backups are better players and the sooner we get them into games the better. Those two would be solid backups though.

Texas' QB had a 17/10 INT to TD ratio last year. Making him make quick intelligent decisions seems to be the way you handle Texas. Blitz party.

I hope you're right. I would love to see random blitzes from players all over the place.

I would also love to see more crossing patterns 8-10 yards deep from the slot, or a TE. That could get us some big yardage, and keep the safeties and backers off balance.

I do think BYU could do a better job of blitzing. I loved Bronco's old style of defense when you never knew when or where the blitz was coming. I know he's not exactly calling all the shots right now, but he's getting conservative.

I thought he was calling all the shots on D. Isn't he still the D Coordinator right now?

Can you smell that 12-0? Me too. If we're lucky this year, we'll get that coveted 3rd place trophy that Utah has been bragging so much about.

Go Cougs.

I believe you're right. Bronco is a good DC, he is probably still feeling out the defense. They will definitely need to play better vs. Texas, but the good news is, they can and likely will.

The defense played aggressive and very physical, which helps against their shortcomings in the speed department.

Unfortunately, a decent passing team should have more success against them. Hopefully the offense can score more points...

Two things I noticed, BYU didn't run any "Now" passes or screens.
Heaps missed two corner blitzes (that shouldn't happen with a returning starter). If he reads those, the receiver should be wide open for a big play.

After so much hype, I didn't see a better offense. It looked pretty Robert Anae like conservative. Heaps looked off. The timing was usually late. And the highly talked about African American WRs weren't getting open.

12-0? You will be lucky to win one of the next two games, not to mention TCU. Also watch out for Utah State. Didn't they pound your asses last year?

Don't they also play Hawaii at the end of the year out on the island? I think that's one that can easily be overlooked by fans. Going out there to play usually gave both BYU and Utah fits in the WAC years. Gary Crowton also saw an undefeated season come unraveled in blowout fashion a few years back while playing @ Hawaii.

At first I shrug off the thought of Utah State winning in Provo and beating BYU in consecutive seasons but after their performance @ Auburn I think you have to give the Aggies at least a shot. Gary Anderson coached teams (going back to his time as a DC) have usually faired pretty well against BYU. Not to mention that USU appears to actually have talent on their roster.

Bronco is in complete control of the D since they fired that other guy. He has always had essentially three looks . . . Max drop (rush 3), Blitz-man, and then the normal 3-4 zone. Nice to see Pendleton back flying around.

I think he was talking about the old "Star Wars" 3-3-5 Bronco. That was kind of cool alignment, but BYU has never had 5 defensive backs that were worthy of being on the field at the same time flying around making plays. We're lucky if we get 2 decent DBs out of 4 most years.

I think he still uses some 3-3-5 concepts. Bronco's defensive philosophy has always been not to put a fourth guy in a 3-point stance in most situations. BYU could probably run whatever it wants for their WAC opponents given the talent matchups. But against better talent I worry about the pass game but confident we can stop the run.
