It'll be awhile before @Ron Mexico is on...

the best available players here I weren't counting on so send me offers for this pick

Not sure about that. Team D was weaker then but defense was WAY more physical.

Against certain teams yes. The players were overall worse back then as well. Imagine Craig Ehlo guarding LeBron or Durant.

Physical defense doesn’t equal good defense at all and that just equals more free throws.

Only if fouls get called. Which they were called less than in part to different rules (hand-checking being allowed being an example). And if that strategy wasn’t effective, we wouldn’t have gotten the Pistons as back-to-back champs. Also, where are the scorers that came anywhere close to Jordan in those years?

The best argument for Jordan not putting up such ridiculous numbers is the sophistication of scouting now vs. then. But scoring was not easier.

Nah, the video evidence is out there. Go back and watch full games, not just highlights and the defense is laughable 90% of the time. And the hand checking argument is absurd. Wow, you could touch their hip when they were 20 feet away from the basket, what a game changer.

That rule change retired Jeff Hornacek. Being able to guard with your hands is a big deal.

Can you clarify? Hornacek was pretty consistent from age 30 - 36 when he retired. A 36 year old, under athletic, undersized, guard should see a pretty dramatic drop off. I'm not saying it wasn't helpful in general I just don't believe for one second it completely changed the game.

Thank you. I feel like people romanticize the past. Literally go watch some of Jordan’s highlight videos. Watch his 63 against the Celtics in the playoffs. Absolutely laughable.

Jordan averaged 30 per game on mostly mid-range jumpers (mostly iso fade-aways) which he shot nearly 50% on during his second 3-peat stint in his mid-30’s. The dude is known as the GOAT for many reasons, this being just one of them.

If one wants to downplay the D of the mid-80’s then I don’t have a lot of ammo against that. The 90’s were a completely different ballgame and that is where he did his best work as a player.

The point of this entire thing is whether a player from history would translate to this era. Jordan would’ve, 37 ppg or not, he would’ve been dominant.

The amount of wide wide wide wide WIDE open 15 footers, like no one within 10 feet of guys is ridiculous. Players were not as long, athletic, talented, skilled, strong, smart, and on and on and on back then. It's not even comparable. I do think Jordan would be right up there with Lebron if they came up at the same time. He was that good. But the silly argument Jordan would score 40, 50, 200 in todays game is so stupid.

Which is an argument no one here has made.

Sure, but it's a very common argument. One thing that I do think was better was the **** talking. Pippen dunking on Ewing then teabagging him, then walking to Spike Lee and **** talking him. That was great back then. The politeness of the modern game is lame.
90’s basketball - all things considered - is the apex of the game. We get to enjoy a more sophisticated product but the artistry and the fire have dwindled immensely.

With less talented players back then as well.

Basketball now is more enjoyable to watch, more skilled, prettier, but yeah, theres less fire or hate. But looking at these scores, 76 - 71 .... nope. Do not want to go back to that.
