President Obama Commencement

The Thriller

Well-Known Member
For those of you interested, President Obama gave a really good speech to young people yesterday. It was a great reminder that presidents don’t have to be assholes who brag about ratings, spew conspiracies, recommend injecting Lysol, or yelling at reporters. We just had to endure the crap we have right now for a little over 6 more months.

Obama's presidency was far from perfect, but if nothing else I miss his rhetoric.

I honestly reckon Trump will get re-elected riding a red Chinese scapegoat.

That is probably true. Then it will be terrible for both economies and Trump voters will demand action. If people actually think China was purposely attacking the USA then what will stop them from doing it again. Things will get ugly, well uglier...

I don't get the impression this has any real traction. I don't think people are buying the idea that COVID-19 was released (intentionally or unintentionally) from a Chinese lab. But even if they have suspicions or wonder if it may have been, what they know is that Trump did not respond well.

Our "enemies" (note quotation marks) might attack us, but it's up to us to be ready and to overcome their attacks.

As a basketball player you can't say "But he drove right at me and then made a blind pass to the big guy." You have to be ready to defend whatever the other team's offense can do. Otherwise you're just getting outplayed by your betters and you can make no claim to "greatness" (note quotation marks) because you're actually just a loser.

I just don't see it working. China gains nothing releasing some virus on their own citizens in the hopes it will reach other countries and spread. The Chinese economy and businesses have been wrecked by this; the world economy rises and falls together, no such thing as siloing. If they really wanted to instill armageddon, they would have made something a hell of a lot deadlier than COVID.

There's no conspiracy here - we need to point the finger at our elected and appointed officials who simply didn't take appropriate precautions. Can you imagine how better off we would have been by subjecting all foreign travelers (American citizens or not) at the airport to a mandatory 14 day quarantine? We could have directed all international arrivals to specific airports, bus them to hotels and continued to do so.

Instead, we got... well, this. No screenings, just a slap on the *** and welcome back to the states. 91k and counting with 100k likely by next Sunday.

I don't think blaming China is going to offset the view that President Trump's administration is failing. Polling shows that American's views on China are increasingly negative. But they also show that views on the Trump administration and its ability to deal with this pandemic are increasingly negative.

Why do you think the increasing death and economic toll will be blamed on China and not on the administration's response? Especially when Trump reminds the nation every single day how inept he is either through tweets or press conferences? A more disciplined administration might be able to stay on message and pull off a Chinese scapegoat campaign. But not this one.

Again, it was only just a few weeks ago when he was suggesting that infected people inject disinfectants to cure the virus. And you think people will look at that and blame China?

Give it another week. Trump will say something else outlandishly stupid and remind us all how pathetic his administration's response has been.

Problem is both your arguements rely on reason and rationality, trump supporters have neither.
I think Trump is definitely going to try to paint democrats as being in league with China- the Hunter Biden thing will play into this quite a bit, and I think coronavirus will as well.

It doesn't have to be true to be effective, it just needs to be able to cast enough doubt in enough peoples minds to keep them home in November.

To be clear, I have no doubt that hardcore Trump followers will support the admin in every conceivable fashion. The whole point of winning the election will be to simply have more than the other side.

It's really about convincing independents, the free agents of the political world, to accept another alternative. And it's really convincing those of half a dozen states since that's ultimately what the election comes to.

The whole election rides on white suburban women in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

If Biden captures them by the types of margins shown in today's polls, he wins. If not, he loses.

And all Democrats need to do is ask people to look at the tags on Trump ties and red hats to see who’s actually in bed with China. All Democrats need to do is remind voters of Trump’s twitter in January and February when he was praising them for their handling of Covid.

I think trying to paint China in the same way that the Bush administration painted saddam Hussein as some terrorist with WMDs at the fingertips is going to fall flat on its face. Scapegoating China is a losing campaign strategy. It’s the same loser strategy they tried in 2018 by making us fearful of the brown horde coming from the southern border to rape our women and take yer jobs!

Sure, but my point is that this strategy isn't necessarily meant to convince voters in the middle to vote for Trump, but to muddy the waters enough to get many of them to stay home. Pointing out that actually Trump is more beholden to China than Biden is, isn't going to help that much.

Hey trumpian’s: Is covid19 a hoax or it the plague that only Donnie can save us from?

I’m having trouble filling the lies.

I find it generally hard to believe that the election is only 5.5 months away. The last two months have been a weird blur where every day simply falls into the next.

I think that’s a failed strategy. Voter enthusiasm is going to be sky high no matter what.

As a Democrat, what i see would be most threatening to us politically, would be for trump to:
  • Put down the ****ing phone.
  • Ramp up testing.
  • Pass a massive stimulus package and expand health care and relief. People that Biden is going to pick off by promising economic relief and health care for. True, he’s not Sanders. But Biden is campaigning well to the left of Obama.
  • Lead us through the pandemic.
If he showed any ability to lead us, I think he’d deliver Democrats a monster blow to the head. But he won’t. He won’t pass **** for people. He campaigns as a populist and governs as a kleptocrat. And he’ll get distracted by anything. Hell, Look at his most recent pinned tweet.

Sadly, his inability to lead us will lead to more death and destruction. We will just grin and bear it until we have new leadership. But if there’s a positive to this pandemic at least it will lead to a change in leadership both for the White House and senate. Hopefully we can get back on track after this election. We really need to shore up our social safety net and work to mend the fissures that have been neglected For years and exacerbated by this administration.

Biden has had a consistent 6 point lead over Trump for over one year. Biden doesn’t really seem to lose popularity with people. And I actually like what his camp is doing right now. He doesn’t need to campaign or criticize. If he did, it would open him up to criticism because it could be spun as being unpatriotic as our nation goes through a pandemic.

So I like the hands off approach. Just let team trump sink their own ship with incessant tweeting and ridiculous press conferences. No need to get into an ideological battle right now which the GOP would be able to spin as "socialism." Just let them continue to circle rudderless in this pandemic sludge.

Then let The Never Trumpers from the Lincoln Project attack him from the side. They aren’t associated with the Biden campaign so they can run the nasty attack ads that we cannot.

It’s trump who needs to campaign and win lost voters. It’s he who got his *** kicked in 2018. He’s the one that needs to restore faith in his “MAGA.”

I liked his good sense of humor and his message to the kids. What he said was absolutely true.

It's just weird to see a president speak in complete sentences, without insulting reporters, or bragging about how many women he's banged. Remember his pandemic "models" comment?

Speaking of bad commencements, have you seen Ben Sasse's? It was trending on twitter yesterday.
