What's new

My hot take on what I'd do in the off-season.

I think Quin wants to but can only do so much with the players he's given. You can't go positionless with so many slow and smaller players. You need athleticism and size and then there's the question of Gobert. Can you go positionless (for the most part) with a player like Gobert on your roster? I think you can but it would take an almost complete roster overhaul and getting rid of players like Conley, Niang, Ingles etc... which isn't going to happen imo. This FO/ownership is too conservative to go down that path.
To play positionless you gotta have complete/well rounded players who can do it all. We are having the exact opposite of that right now. A bunch of one-dimensional guys who are basically useless and liabilities on the floor when they can't hit their shots.

What do you think about OPJ?
IMO he could be the good "3 and D" player we need.
I only don't know if we could have a real chance to trade Conley for him...

To me it's up to Mitchell now. I think there might still be issues. If not, yeah I want to keep Gobert unless someone makes a good trade offer for him.
A perfect post.

The entire offseason belongs to Donovan. He has had a better first 3 years of his career than MJ or LeBron. The kid is amazing on and off the court. DL and Quin need to sit down with Don and ask his opinion on what to do with Rudy, Conley, and Clarkson.

Danny Ferry destroyed Cleveland around LeBron so LeBron left. DL had a Danny Ferry summer in 2019. It would be idiotic to overpay Gobert and/or Clarkson if Don doesn't love the fit.

First thing I do - I offer Mitchell 5max. If he doesn't accept, ask him if he would accept any other offer and if he wants something like a 3 year deal I sign him to it and immediately start listening to trade offers for him(not actively searching for trades, but actively listening).

Second thing I do - figure out what the max would be that I would like to pay Gobert and offer something in that range to him. If he doesn't accept, immediately begin search for trade partner.

If none of them want to stay for what I offer them, start selling off the whole team. Ingles, Bogdanovic, Conley... all of them ... rebuild.

If Mitchell takes the 5max but Rudy doesn't take what I offer, trade Rudy either for high draft picks or win now pieces in the timeline of Mitchel. If we trade Rudy, I might actually do Conley for Horford. Or take Favors back. Or look for a trade for Gobert that includes a young-ish center in the timeline of Mitchell(Turner? Allen? Wendel Carter?)

If Rudy takes whatever offer we make but Mitchell doesn't - keep the team with hope for one more run next year... while listening to the market for Mitchell... If you love an offer take it and try to retool around Gobert for as long as we can be competitive... then... rebuild...

If both want to stay and seem like they want to work together, keep them and try to retool around them... find a longer and/or more athletic wing.

Great post. I agree with it all.

After what we do what @stitches post said figuring out Don and Rudy, I think we need to make a decision of Conley OR Clarkson. Choose one as the catalyst for the 2nd unit.

If we commit to Conley, go in knowing that the goal is to re-sign him after next year to a less than MLE type deal.

If we commit to Clarkson, move Conley in the offseason. Makes no sense to me to pay $45+ million on Conley and Clarkson next year. Their contributions and limitations are too similar to pay that kind of money for both when we need defenders and bigs.

Does Conley even have any value at this point?
Yes. He is a great leader. He can still be good as a team's 4th or 5th best player in the right system. His expiring could be very attractive for a few teams looking to dump a longer deal.

I think Detroit is a perfect fit. He could support Blake and Wood while Kennard spreads the floor and Doumbouya develops. Conley and Rose could share PG duties. Play different roles.

I'd be more interested in Griffin than Love.

And I get it he's the bench scorer, but damn does Clarkson need to buy into the team game just a bit more.

We should look at big changes but we won't. One thing that I have learned is DL would rather try and drive something into the ground and be right than make changes and admit he was off. He couldn't even handle Mike being moved to the bench.

We will run it back and make changes around the edges of the roster.

With Johnny Bryant leaving I'd like to see if we could coax Igor back. We should keep some of the g league guys. We will look to move Ed and address backup 5... outside of that we will do nuthin.

Basically hope we pull another good late pick out of our *** otherwise this is kind of our ceiling.

I need to wait a week before I give my flaming hot takes... they are too fiery right now.

Authentic and genuine.

Proud of Donovan. Proud of being a Jazzfan.

Great interview. Thanks for sharing.

The highlights (1:30-2:00) really just twisted the knife in me even more. There are two or three shots he hits in those highlights that would have been AND1's for any other guy in the league of his calibur. Flat out, the refs treated him like a a 2nd rate, recently called up GLeague player last night. He didn't get calls that he would have gotten in the other 6 games yet they called him on some weak stuff in the first half that made him sit out for a long period. That's unacceptable. If I'm the Jazz staff, I'm sending tape to the league office to voice concerns. We lost 4 games, and 3 of those were led by the same crew chief?

Overall, we have to be very proud of Donovan. He just scored the most points in the history of the first round of the NBA playoffs. He had an incredible series. I'm so glad he plays for our Jazz.

I think the DL/Snyder dynamic is an odd one, even if they don't. What I mean by that is DL is definitely the 401k/index fund guy who wants to be slow and steady, put the money in without thinking about it, trust the strategy, then look at long-term gains. QS is a day trader, but he comes in the skin of appearing as a long-term-investment guy. His gains and losses are all over the place, but when mistaken for a long-term strategy, many are reassured to just trust the long-term vision. Inevitably, there will be a few days where the runs are huge, and the gentle reminder is, "see, we told you to be patient," but just as those few days of runs are high, there can be a couple days that sink any gains. But those highs definitely feel good, but unless the timing for when to get in and out of the market is perfect, the decisions typically aren't going to coincide with the best strategy.

We need to stop treating it like the dichotomy. It's cool that we want to keep pushing the sex machine stuff, but ultimately the best preparation for going deep into the post-season is to just get out there as early as possible and win games. That's it. Focus on the here and now and stop trying to think 25 moves ahead. We kept hearing that Quin costing us games with running the iso-ball was getting us ready for the playoffs, and that the regular season games didn't matter as much because he was hatching some genius schemes.

The post-season just came and went.

He's a good coach. But perhaps we could use more of the passionate Quin and less of the sex machine Quin.

As I see it, the Jazz have only the MLE (mid-level exception) and the MIN (minimum player contract) to offer to free agents. We have our draft picks, and the possibility of doing a trade or two.

Step 1. Trade Mike Conley to Cleveland for Kevin Love. Why does Utah do it? We need rebounding, we need outside shooting and the Mike Conley-Donovan connection seemed more disconnected than not most of the time. Utah needs to push to compete in the 2020-2021 season, the Warriors will make the playoffs again this year, and it's going to be tight, but hopefully another team might be able to slip past them in the West as they try to integrate their new players (and it still might be impossible).

Step 2. Sign Aron Baynes for the MIN. Like Gobert, he's a fantastic screen-assist guy, and is a veteran who hits 35% from 3 and 80% from the FT line.

Step 3. Re-sign Jordan Clarkson - the Jazz have his Bird rights, so this is easy and a no-brainer.

Step 4. Sign the best mid-level shooter you can get - there is rumors that teams will look to dump cash this year, especially with not knowing when the season is even going to open and whether or not they will be even be able to fill arenas. There is the idea that there may not be a lot of buyers in this year's free agency and that will drive prices down (I doubt it, but we will see). The Jazz might want to look at:

Rodney Hood, Jerami Grant*, Evan Fournier, Goran Dragic, Davis Bertrans

Step 5. Draft your best athlete with the longest wing-span. Maybe Patrick Williams 6-7 w 6-11 wingspan SG/SF. Aaron Nesmith 6-6 w 6'10 span. Saddiq Bey 6'8" w 7'0"wingspan. Tyler Bey 6'7 w 7'1" wingspan.

Jazz Roster:

C- Rudy Gobert, Aron Baynes
PF - Kevin Love, Juwan Morgan
SF - Bojan Bogdanovic, Tyler Bey
SG - Evan Fournier, Joe Ingles
PG - Donovan Mitchell, Jordan Clarkson
That starting lineup is a bottom-10 defense.
