What's new

Who's getting bought out this year?

This. If Niang is hitting on 40% of his 3's then that gives us something, but he brings almost nothing else, even his current improved D notwithstanding. His D hasn't improved enough to be a difference maker on the floor, so if we can upgrade we should. Hopefully Oni can be more consistent and perhaps provide us with the true straight-up 3&D we need in that 9th spot.
I think Niang has some added value as a passer and ball handler in the offense but he is forcing up some threes he shouldn't. Oni seems extremely disciplined and will likely stay within himself. He looked great on Tatum and Brown last night.

Holy cow, just realized Niang is down to 29% from 3.

His leash is quite long. How much longer can he play at such a sub-par level shooting wise (because he seems to be solid, if not good, on D so far.)
It feels like every other night he forces a three that he shouldn't. If he eliminated that forced three I think he'd be closer to his normal percentages. Last night the one off the rebound/scramble was stupid. He will force up a contested one in transition every now and again too... I feel like he needs to chill if he's gonna stay in the rotation. The offense is so good that we don't need to force that one up.

Problem is his shooting has been very sporadic. He straight up sucked for the first what, 8 games or so? Then he had a hot stretch for a few games, then has just been all over the board. Without a reliable 3 his D is not good enough, even though he has noticeably improved in that regard. I hope he either gets it together or someone else steps up.

Not that the 9th dude is making that big a difference but with possible COVID restrictions always hanging over the league, we need every guy to 10 to be at least capable of spot minutes when we lose someone to a quarantine. Or injury or whatever.

We've played enough games where Niang's shooting is a worry...but he has been pretty solid defensively and he knows how to keep the offense moving. If he shoots like he has his whole career, suddenly you have a really good player. OTOH, I wouldn't mind seeing Oni or Morgan take some minutes from them. Probably Morgan...I think we undervalue that Niang is a bigger body. If Oni is playing we're putting a size burden on Ingles or Clarkson and I don't think that's a great idea.

As far as the buyout market, I would love to get RHJ. I'm not sure why he's struggled to find a team, but my guess is that he and his agent are just going to wait it out to find the best spot. A contender will come calling.

I really doubt he's holding out. He signed a non-guaranteed deal to go to camp with a team that's currently tied for the worst record in the league. And he got waived. I'm willing to bet he answers any phone call.

Jazz' doing it well. Won't put my money on the sustainability of it, but I probably won't mess with it either.
So, unless a way is found to address the Jokic/Davis/Embiid thing without jackpotting around too much...

Fair...but if I was his agent and teams were calling, I'd probably tell him to wait unless he's really hurting for paychecks. From all indications this season is a huge grind on the players and there's a lot of players who are unhappy/miserable with the protocols.

Tbh, the RHJ situation doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I don't know why he had to sign a NG in the first place. He played 20 MPG on a good team last year and was healthy for camp. I said the same thing with Shaq, but there's probably something we don't know (for Shaq it was an injury).

It would also help to have a monopoly on all the Rudy G’s. We need SA to crash and for Pops to do us a solid.
That's step 1. Step 2 is finding a way to get the other Bogdanovic from Atlanta so we can have lineups with Bojan Bogdanovic, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Rudy Gay, and Rudy Gobert. Opposing players will get confused about who they're supposed to guard and leave us open for layups

Quin is also hiring Rudy Giuliani as an assistant coach.

Probably to the point where teams sag off of him defensively and he can't make them pay. Right now he is better for our spacing than Oni, because teams defend him closely at the 3 point line.

Long term I think Oni is better as a spot up guy too... He gets his shot off super quick... if he can hit 35-40% you won't be able to give any space. Niang's jumper requires a little loading time.

Trevon Scott with the SLC Stars looked pretty good today from what little I could see. He was a UDFA pickup, like Juwan Morgan last year. Scott is a 6'8", 225-lb. wing who does a bit of everything. Not quite sure what level he does it at, but he's at least more mobile than Niang. He was 15/6/3 today with 3/5 from 3pt.

Niang's D has improved a little this season but his shooting has been awful. He's the only weak link in the rotation and it would be nice to upgrade.

Give me all the Gay Favors please!

We will tell the opposing team in our best accent: Juwan Hughes Gay Favors an' da Forrest.

Totally random but when I was at the gym today they had a G-League game on and Jarrett Jack was playing against Jeremy Lin. Jack is like 37 but he was lighting everyone up. He's so crafty. I hope someone signs the guy.

I thought Jack was retired. Lol. That's a big blast from the past.

I think y'all underestimate Niang's impact on the lockerroom. Sure the guy has flaws, but chemistry is driving the success this year. I think he is a big part of that.

Any Niang replacement would sacrifice chemistry and probably get in the way of Oni development.

The biggest argument in favor, or one of them, is how much he’s improved this year. He’s rebounding, playing adequate defense, and he’s even done some great drives to the basket. We should see how much he can keep improving. His improvement gives us the flexibility to make time to develop guys like Oni and Morgan, and rest guys like Ingles and Favors.

This is the kind of season I wouldn’t want to rock the boat too much. Pick up a decent vet for cheap like RHJ or Ariza, not just for depth but to keep them away from the competition, and we’re good.
