Crypto Thread! No PORN!

Pardon my ignorance, but how does Bitcoin mining affect the environment and fossil fuel use?
The majority of bitcoin is mined on ASICs in China using very cheap electricity running on coal fired power plants.

But the international banking industry uses MUCH more electricity than bitcoin.

And how much electricity is that using?
According to the Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance (CCAF), Bitcoin currently consumes around 110 Terawatt Hours per year — 0.55% of global electricity production, or roughly equivalent to the annual energy draw of small countries like Malaysia or Sweden. This certainly sounds like a lot of energy.

A lot

And why does it take that much energy to mine Bitcoin?
You use either GPUs or ASICs to solve extraordinarily complex cryptographical puzzles. They basically do this be trying combination after combination until they find the one that opens the lock and rewards them with a block of bitcoin. It is competitive, so many millions of GPUs or ASICs might all be trying to solve the same puzzle at the same time. The first one to get the right answer wins all the rewards and everyone moves onto the next block.

How much energy does internet porn use?
