Game Thread Jun 12, 2021 06:30PM MT: Jazz at Clippers - Game 3

Added to Calendar: 06-12-21

I was always under the impression that the ball has to be more than half-way out of the cylinder, which it was. Maybe that’s not the rule, but that’s how it’s been called since always.
I'm curious about this as well. I literally have no idea what is goal tending and what isn't

One thing to consider, game 3 is always a huge emotional game for the team that is losing the series. The fact that the Clippers really couldn't quite pull away for the most part until after we threw in the towel makes me think that the Jazz are still very much in control here.

If Donovan is okay and we get Mike back for game 4, I like our chances.

I’m asking more if that’s correct on the rule. But in any case, I’m not sure if that’s a call that can be challenged. Maybe it can. But it’s much less subjective than a contact review.
Pretty sure it can be challenged because the was a whistle and a dead ball. If they wouldn't have called it goal tending then I don't think the clippers could challenge it though. Unless they stopped the clock with a timeout

Then again, I don't really understand the rules behind challenges either

I have thought the rule is if the ball is coming off the rim and it's tapped in, it's good. But if it's on the cylinder and it's not clear that it's coming off, then it's goal tending. Who is the expert on this here?

That's what I thought too but I think we are wrong and white chocolate is right on this one.

It should be the way we thought it worked though.

They played a near perfect game and we were not close to perfect and were still in it. If their role players keep shooting 120% on 3s we are in trouble but I doubt they will. If don is okay so are we.

Everyone remember that niang is a 42.5% shooter from three this year and played very good defense all year and almost never made mistakes like last night.

We need his contributions going forward in these playoffs.

If it's coming off the rim (if any part of the basketball is outside and below the rim), then it isn't basket-interference. Refs blew the call and there's no reason they couldn't go back and change it since the ball dies either way. It was rather clear, actually.

lolno, it was clear but not in the way you’re claiming (maybe you’re thinking about international rules?)

from the NBA rulebook, #2 applies...

RULE NO. 11: Basket Interference – Goaltending

Section I—A Player Shall Not:
  1. Touch the ball or the basket ring when the ball is sitting or rolling on the ring and using the basket ring as its lower base or hang on the rim while the ball is passing through.
    1. EXCEPTION: If a player near his own basket has his hand legally in contact with the ball, it is not a violation if his contact with the ball continues after the ball enters the cylinder, or if, in such action, he touches the basket.
  2. Touch any ball from within the playing area when it is above the basket ring and within the imaginary cylinder.

Niang's value isnt in his personal stats. He usually does a great job running the offense/defense and making the right play. Tonight was an unusually bad decision making game from him.
Niang is a decent backup. Nothing more. When he's clearly off, just take him out but the Jazz don't have too many valid alternatives in the rotation to take his minutes.

That's the point I'm making. We need more guys to take minutes in this rotation.

Even Royce is nothing more than just a decent rotation guy(like Torrey Craig) and does not justify playing over 30min a night. On the wolves or magic maybe. But not on a championship contending team. Same like Niang, on some nights he is amazing. But on some nights he is off, getting walked over on D, and too scared to shoot a wide open jumper. In that case we need to put him on the bench but again, who is there to take his minutes when that happens?

Don't expect those scrub projects to help much. Namely Oni, who is nothing but disappointment so far. Why even bother wasting time on those scrub projects when we can just go ahead and grab rotation prices straight from free agency and trade market. I mean guys like Payne, Rivers and Craig who are ready to contribute from day one, and probably are already the ceilings for the likes of Hughes, Oni, Morgan, etc?

This is not correct. It was the right call unfortunately as well. Ball was still in the cylinder.

It's that's correct then quin should have challenged. Though maybe he didn't see it.
