What would this do?

I’m asking this as a non-hater at the moment. I’m legitimately asking this. I get some of you don’t agree with me, but there are plenty of hints Donovan is not altogether happy here. His new extension kicks in next year so the money lines up decently to work. If you called Portland and offered Donovan in a trade for Dame I actually think they would do it. What is your opinion in what it would actually do as far as the team goes for the near future. If Donovan is happy here obviously you don’t do it, but if he’s unhappy here I think Dame would obviously be one of your best options to try and get. Does it make us any better? Obviously you would have to secure up the perimeter defense still as well.

Dame is 30, he'll be 31 by the start of the season. I don't feel good about paying him $54m when he's 34.

Dame just signed a long *** extension like a year ago. They’re signed for the same amount of time, better is a real stretch, he has a chance to be. I also think Dame fits the window of a lot of our guys just fine. My point is idk if Donovan wants to be here and if you had to trade him Dame would be a good call to make. I mean how do you think it would impact the play of the team.

Dame’s game is a lot of shooting, it can last longer than a game that relies on athleticism. I actually think Dons bad ankle kind of showed us what his game will do as his athleticism goes away, he’ll have to primarily be a jump shooter. I’d ton love Dames contract either, but if it’s something you had to do it’s a viable and decent option. We may give Mike Conley an extension at age 33 and he’s smaller than Dame.

Conley is 1 inch shorter than Dame. And we wouldn't be giving him an extension, we'd be signing him to a new contract, technically.

And, look, I love Dame, he's great. But his team has lost in the 1st round 4 of the last 5 years, and 3 of those were sweeps. So let's not talk about him like he's a proven commodity or a basketball savior or anything.

Different player, same problems. I understand the reasoning if Don really wants out but I'm not sure that's the case. I think he just wants a more well rounded team around him.

He scored 38, 9, and 9 with that bad ankle. That's pretty good imo.

Right, but he’ll be more of a shooter like Dame than a driver. He had a hell of a time driving or doing much inside and making passes out. I’d guess he’s 6 feet tall and relies heavily on athleticism to do things inside or play make.

Well yes, but their defense is horrendous trash. Ours was last night, the difference between the two is simply Portland has CJ for offense and we have Rudy defensively.

For sure, I think it would be a pretty lateral move but I also think it’s one of the best trades you could make/get. Dame has said he has a willingness to play in Utah (now some of that was because he is really good friends with Johnnie Bryant who is gone now) but he also has the Weber state connection and I do think he’s a player who would actually be happy/fine with a trade here who is a legitimate star.

You have a younger cheaper version of Dame although not like for like in how they play in Don already no sense in swapping them. Which is why im 100% ok if Conley isn't back. I think he will be back since you can't just go out and spend to replace him but I think he'll be used differently next season. But if he is gone Don can slide into the "PG" spot sure he doesn't have the passing ability of Dame but in today's more positionless basketball it'll be fine. You just have to surround him and Rudy with the correct players. And for Donovan's "hints" he isn't happy here are non existent. You're looking for something that just isn't there. Sure he might like a tweet about something in New York that doesn't mean he wants to just up and leave there has been 0 evidence in that. The Jazz now have a owner that is younger that understands this generation and more aligns with his thinking and a minority owner who is a NBA legend who he himself has been compared to that will be a mentor to him. And i'm sorry but last night all but confirmed it if it wasn't true already. This is Don's team. Plain and simple. This roster was setup for Rudy with him manning the middle with 4 shooters and it got exposed. One player dropped 39/9/9 on one leg while the other couldn't handle 6'9 forwards. That's not a slight at Rudy. He is what he is but now is the time to alter the roster to more align with Donovan's timeline. He is the face of the franchise, he is the marketable one, he is the one you give the ball to when you need a bucket but that doesn't mean Rudy isn't the backbone of the team and that's ok.

Why would it be a bad thing if he was more a shooter like Dame? He is a great shooter and has had some struggles finishing at times.

I didn’t say it would, i said we saw how his game will likely change once the athleticism starts to fall.

First off, I don’t agree that hints aren’t there, which is why I asked the question if it was something that did happen and you could get Dame what exactly the team might look like with Dame instead of Donovan.

It would look nearly identical. You still have the same issues whether it's Donovan or Dame. A few years ago we couldn't score to save our life against the Rockets. Now we can't defend on the wings to save our life. The pendulum swung too far in the opposite direction it now needs another correction. We need to turn players like Bojan, Ingles, Niang, Oni, Thomas into long athletic defensive players who can still score.

Agreed, and as I mentioned in an earlier reply yeah you’d have to make similar changes to the roster but I think if you needed this would be a great trade and probably the best one you could hope for.

So.... Change into an even better game? Sounds good to me.
