What did they do? I'm not a big hockey fan, I'm just repeating some of what I've read. Anyway, we can only guess as to how the NBA would handle the situation. Regardless of what they did in the NHL, I'm only speculating on some of what I've been reading.
Anyway, I guess this is all pretty pointless if they get a deal done tonight. Hopefully that'll be the case.
Without looking it up, I believe what they did was allocate each team a lottery ball for each season they didn't make the playoffs. Those teams were then entered into the lottery. Most teams would be in this lottery as most teams did not make the playoffs in one of the last three seasons. Instead of your typical 14 teams, I would guess, it would therefore be more like 20 teams in the lottery. We would be one of those teams since we did not make the playoffs last season. The remaining teams (Lakers, Mavs, etc.) would then go in order based purely on record. Or something like that I think.
