2021 NBA Draft Preview (new thread)

Can we stop talking about Kuzma? He's a rotation player, but he's not a difference maker on either side of the ball.
Most of the guys in this draft you're debating hope to be what Kuzma has been. How many NBA players average over 15ppg and 5rpg their first 4 years? Probably a pretty small list all things considered.

I like Roko, Kevin Murphy and JT Thor over Kuzma as a starting point. None of those require us giving up a player and helping the effing Lakers.

Here's Roko just a few months ago -- 38 pts, 6 3PMs, 10 rebs. He's got a bit of Gordon Hayward and a bit of Kevin Love to him, and he's only 18 y.o. I'd have a hard time seeing the Jazz pass on him if he's available at #30.

The Jazz have had a habit of drafting older players with the idea that they're more ready to contribute. But then those rookies don't really play in their first or second season anyway, which means the Jazz could have developed a younger, more talented player instead.

For example, Grayson Allen was older and more "ready to contribute" than Anfernee Simons and Gary Trent Jr., but in reality he didn't actually contribute more in his first few seasons than those other guys. Dok and Hughes didn't play at all last this year.
Well to be fair but Udoka and Hughes got hurt and they had no summer league at all. The big problem was the Jazz signing Favors. If they had really believed in Udoka once he was healthy he could have taken Favors minutes. Hughes is a second rebound pick. He was picked to be developed but his injury put him farther behind. Add i the new revelation that Quin is Jerry Sloan lite when it comes to his rotations. Simons hasn't blossomed into anything and did Portland trade GT this year.

Signing Favors was fine. He should have a bit of positive trade value still, and the Jazz like to carry three bigs. GT has contributed as much as Grayson Allen has, and he has more ability to play on the ball.

Favs trade value is neutral at best.

If Favors had a team option instead of a player option I would say he has positive (or at least neutral) value, but I just dont know if he does. He seems like a guy who can barely play 20 mpg.

Though I do believe our perception of Favors is extremely tainted by watching him compared to Gobert, but still, I just don't know. I do think the big man value has risen with the rise of elite 1-on-1 post players like Embiid and Jokic, but I dont know if it's enough to make him have positive trade value.

But all it takes is one team and if Utah gave him the contract they gave him, you have to think there was another team willing to come close to that. Favors did have a really solid regular season stats wise. Per 30 minutes he was right around 11-11-2-1-1 on efficient shooting. I think a team like the Lakers could really use him. He gives them what Drummond can give defensively without the terrible offensive decision making and the entitlement of being a starter.

That's the list of free agent centers. There arent any studs available in UFA. Favors is right there with most of these players.

  • Zeller really good, but cant never stay healthy
  • Holmes is a rising energy big
  • Someone will always be enamored with the talent of Drummond/Whiteside despite them being negatives
  • Lopez is reliable but aging
  • Boban is fun but cant play a lot
  • Kanter is good at what he does and awful at what he doesnt
  • Theis is a solid player, probably close to Favors level and some may prefer him for his shooting

Everyone else is right at replacement level or below though from what I can tell. Favors may be the most solid of all these centers. Maybe someone is willing to take the slight overpay for a reliable 20 mpg center who doesnt have huge holes, but idk.

He is pretty good but Kevin O'Connor hypes him way too much.
Honestly my first time watching him. He seems twitchier than Sabonis? Obviously the Jazz have no shot at him and they probably would go elsewhere even if they were in the draft range for him, but I like what I saw.
