Favors to OKC in works (Update: Traded)

I am but I’m not. It’s a move that had to happen and I’m excited as **** to see Udoka who has massive upside imo.
It didn't have to happen. We could have just paid Favors and played Doke more.

I'm a big guy always pushing trades, so I'm going to look for angles for how this can be turned into a positive.

We get a trade exception now… but no way we use all of it.

Couldn't the Jazz get more than a 2nd rounder for him?
what were you expecting? OKC is doing us a favor by taking Favors and his bad contract. I do not like giving away draft picks but in this case we had to do it. The only good thing is that first might be very low the next few years and the 2nd we got may be a high second round pick because OKC is still going to be bad for awhile. That is if the 2nd is from OKC. This is a good business move but it could also be a good basketball move if Udoka gets playing time and does well. We have to find out if he can play or not. I just hope this is our front office thinking.

We need to see the protections here. We also got a second. I am not sure we didn’t do the equivalent of what Detroit did… moved back 20 spots to get off Plumlees money. Also remember when the Bucks gave up a first for PJ Tucker? They also got a second from Houston… so it was a swap of 24 for 31. It could be we are in the 20s and OKC is in the 30s. I want all the details before I get too hung up. There weren’t a lot of cap space teams and some didn’t want additional salary.

There is an outside shot we suck in FA and don’t use taxpayer MLE… if that happens can we use the trade exception and a second to get Nance? If the rumors are true that is doable.

Easiest prediction ever: Thunder play him regular minutes. He puts up stats on a terrible team. They flip him at the deadline or offseason as an asset.
Yep. They will trade him to some place like Boston for Tristan Thompson straight up and get cap space for next summer. Rinse and repeat.

And I’m back to being frustrated with this organization… this pick is likely, what, three years out? You’re a more optimistic person than I am if you think that doesn’t have a chance at being a lottery pick…

Mortgaging the future to try and win a championship is great, doing so to shed a contract that was bad from day one is depressing.

At $50M, which is the savings for Faves, you can buy your way back in at a fraction of the price.

Hopefully the pick is heavily protected and turns to 2 second rounders when it conveys.

Had to happen, though. I like Fave and hopefully he rehabs well at OKC and can play on a contender.

Depends on how he plays in the season. Some guys get exposed in playoffs and others thrive. You have to find out.
Now that we have traded Favors, I want our playoff C position to look like:

Rudy
Small Ball 5 (which we need to acquire)

Doke is there for Rudy foul trouble. I don't think it's fair to expect too much of Doke. Also, so much of playoff basketball is played now with PF's at C.

This pick will likely be our 2024 pick since the MEM pick will convey next year in all likelihood.

So no first in 2022, retain ours in 2023, no first in 2024.

Look forward to more second round prospect scouring.

Guys, we all love Favors but he was really shell of a player he once was. Plus, okc will probably wave him and we'll bring him back for the minimum again

I agree, although I'm not confident Quin will be flexible enough or even capable of coaching a different defensive scheme.

It didn’t have to happen though.
Semantics. We weren’t winning it all running it back with an identical core. We need to adapt on the fly; sign Gay or someone like that to have a shot, do something. And keeping Favors and signing Gay AND re-signing Conley would’ve brought on an absurd tax. Smith could pay it, of course, but why pay it when you can save the money and play Udoka? And/or sign a third center for far far cheaper. It just makes too much sense—unless of course the 1st is only top five protected. This added with the fact that Favors is just a crappy contract and it had to happen IMO.

As a side note, if we do sign Batum or Gay, with Butler, Ingles, Gay/Batum and presumably Udoka on the 2nd unit, Clarkson becomes much more expendable to me. I know Don might get butthurt but if we could flip Clarkson for a cheaper 3 and D guy mid-season (maybe Aminu shows something) then I think that’s a smart move.
