What's new

Jazz sign Hassan Whiteside

Clearly he didn't sign a vet minimum thinking he could beat Gobert for the starter position. I'm optimistic that he understands why he's here and he'll step up as needed. The dude could easily average 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks a night as a back up to Rudy.
Yes, please.

I really like this signing. In fact, I’ve liked this Jazz offseason more than most I can recall. We can now at least play a consistent defense for an entire game, and can use Rudy Gay for small-ball lineups at the 5 if need be. Getting Conley back, and getting an absolute draft steal (so they say) in Butler in the 2nd round (and getting two 2nd round draft picks in the process) tells me that they are all-in for “win now” mode. JZ is making a run for GM of the year if this pans out.

My biggest worry is that Q now has the tools to run the same defense all regular season..... and so he will.

In fact, I can’t see how all jazz fans aren’t feeling that same chill.

The principles behind this signing aren’t inherently flawed. They’re fine. It’s all up to Q, though, when it comes to how this plays out in the real world.

I’ll be worried.
I think Q is one of the most cerebral coaches in the long term, I bet he has solved all of the issues that plagued us vs Clipps and even the Grizz to a lesser extent. The trouble is you never get to Narnia the same way twice.

Gobert and whiteside would’ve been valuable in the early 2000s when facing the twin towers in SA or Shaq in LA.

It’ll be interesting to see how many teams force us out of playing Gobert and whiteside by going small? The genie is out of the bottle. Want to beat the jazz? Don’t go big. Downsize and have your 1-4 beat our 1-4. Since no one other than Royce attempts to play defense, teams may try to beat us with their 1-4 and not even let Rudy or whiteside impact the game. Hell, I’d be willing to bet a lot of teams force us next year to take Rudy out of the game because they’re so small and fast.
I mean part of that is not having a hobbled Mitchell and Conley. You also have to be able to hit 40% + from 3 as a team for this to work. It isn't like every team we face can even attempt this.

A lot of people were hoping for Kaminski. This is better.

The best part is that it allows us to load manage Gobert against the truly awful teams of the league. You can use discount Rudy against bad and shorthanded teams with Doke as a backup. Or, if the worst happens, we could weather a Rudy injury without playing entirely differently. If Doke comes on, you can offload a min contract Whiteside pretty easily.

Whiteside is just one year removed from averaging 15.5 PPG, 13.5 RPG and 2.9 BPG. Can’t go wrong with him for the minimum.
