What's new

Game Thread Oct 13, 2021 07:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Bucks (Preseason)

Added to Calendar: 10-13-21

Last chance to see some of our guys that won't play much this season (or maybe they will with all the garbage time).

- Oni: I'm wondering if he got extended run so the team can make a decision on his contract. I think it's a tough call. He does some things really well. He can play defense on the perimeter and in the paint. He's a good rebounder, and is generally in the right place at the right time off ball. He has 0 play making skills and has to be able to hit a wide open 3, which hasn't fallen for awhile now. He could fit a huge need and be great in a switching style defense, he just hasn't made enough progress from last year to make me too hopeful.
-Hughes: Made some good progress over the off season, so that is promising. Showed more defensive potential and play making. I see him as an all around ok player, but not overly excited about him.
- Dok: He has to be able to defend a spaced floor in today's NBA. He's really far away from that. His screens and pressure at the rim make him a better offensive player than expected. I don't see him taking minutes away from Whiteside anytime soon.
-Forrest: I like him, but if only he could shoot. I'm not sure he gets any time with Butler. Probably spends most the season with the G league unless there are lots of injuries.
- Second two way: I would give the slight edge to Teague over Fitts. Maybe they have their eye on someone outside the team. Teague seems very in control and can handle the ball. Fitts can shoot and has some size though, so maybe he just needs some development time.

I'd keep Hughes and Forrest. Hughes has legit offensive skills - I'd give him another year to see how he develops. And Forrest does a lot of good things where I'd give him another year on the off chance he can develop his shot to the point where he can hit a wide open 3 (I have my doubts though).

The rest are not NBA players.

Fitts >>>>>>> Teague for the two way. Roster needs and just overall nba talent. I like him more than Oni… Oni is coming up third imo between Fitts/Hughes/Oni.

I’d give Fitts the two way and release Oni to save some money of Ryan is asking the FO to save some pennies. It’s the easiest way to save a few pennies and Locke has indicated they might do so. Rather that then a meaningful roster player is traded later.

And so we come full circle. IF Oni gets even a single minute ahead of Butler then Snyder should be fired.
Did kanter get min ahead of Rudy?

Did AB get min ahead of Donovan?

Did Lyles get min ahead of Jingles?

Did Bradley get min ahead of Royce?

Even the Great Georges Niang, aka Quin's son, did not get minutes ahead of Jeff Green until DL cut Jeff to force Quin play him more, and we know how that worked out for us.

Trust me, we wouldn't even be having this conversation about Quin if your worry is warranted cuz he would already haven been triple fired for burying Rudy/Jingles/Donovan/Royce back in 2015 or 2018, just like Corbin. Compared to ty Corbin and Dennis Lindsey, Quin's the least of my concern when it comes to judging talent cuz record shows time and time again that the man knows his ****.

Man, Butler is looking good. We may be able to trade Conley for a nice asset (a defensive wing who can score).

It comes down to Fitts & Teague. I like either on the 2nd 2-way. Royce became beloved during Summer League practices and beat out Joel Bolomboy; I wonder who has been better practice-wise between Fitts & Teague?

This is the essence of Miye Oni lmao. Terrible body control with ball in hand. This should be an easy take to the rim for a foul, or take to the rim and kick to corner for a 3. Settles for the very first pass he sees (that's what he always does).

7 greater than signs seems a little extreme.

I thought Udoka looked great in that final run to win the game (last 5-7 minutes or so). He was clamping down on the defensive end and had a big dunk (after a nice block) and the assist for the dunk to the cutter.
Kind of streaky—sometimes he looks disinterested then he wakes up and is a physical force…a woke Doke if you will. Might be a conditioning thing?

Oni is probably worth keeping just for his size/athletic ability/hustle. He definitely has to study how Royce plays and is successful in the system despite having little to no on-ball skill.

Does Jared Butler have flairs of D-Will? Obviously doesnt have the huge body of D-Will that was key to his signature style, but I don't think anyone has had as satisfying a crossover on the Jazz as Butler since D-Will. Plus he has vision and willingness to pass.
Butler looks pretty damn big to me. What are their height and weight comparisons?

Oni the only player that would actually pass to Gobert from 18 feet out to create in a end of shot clock situation lmfao. It gave us that wet jumper tho.
I didn't get to see that play so thanks for that. Don't ever want to miss a gobert jumpshot

Combine measurements:

Deron
Height w/o shoes: 6'1.75''
Weight: 202.4
Wingspan: 6'6.25''
Standing reach: 8'2''

Jared
Height w/o shoes: 6'2.25''
Weight: 193.0
Wingspan: 6'4''
Standing reach: 8'2.5''

So Butler's a tiny bit taller, but Deron had broader shoulders and 10 more lbs of weight.

His post up alone would be absolutely huge. Next time teams want to try 5 wide we make them pay down low. Even Paschall with his wider frame is capable.
Seems like we've got an answer for every strategy they can throw at us now! Bring on the small ball or the bully ball, we ready!!!

I just hope Quin is able to read it in real time and make the necessary substitutions to counter, instead of just playing to rank as he sometimes tends to do. We've got the swiss army knife now so let's not use the knife end to turn the screws!

So you mean he would be let go for free just like Niang?

He will be **** on even if he plays good basketball. I must be have watched a different game, because he was really good in the second half. He made several defensive plays, pushed the ball well, and even made good passes out of attacking closeouts.

Don't get me wrong, Oni is not as good as Jared Butler, but that doesn't mean he should be immediately cut like I've been seeing all preseason. People relentlessly **** on Niang even when he was playing well. They made up his mind that he couldn't play, so there was nothing he could do to change that opinion. Same thing is happening with Oni. I definitely want to see Butler play instead regardless of the lineup composition, but it's understandable why Oni might play because we are dying to have that Royce O'Neale type on the floor at all times. Flaws and all.

Just last year people were so excited about Oni thinking he was a lockdown defender. Maybe it's because I could tell he wasn't that I'm less disappointed in him, but he's still a good defender nonetheless. He's not as good on ball as you would hope because he takes bad angles and is mostly reliant on his athleticism to recover, but the flip side of that is that he is really great at defending on close outs and covering space with his speed and length.
