Oni traded to Thunder

Actually OKC is probably flipping Oni and a second rounder for Jae’Sean Tate.
 
Here are three names that hit the waiver wire this afternoon: Gabriel Deck by OKC 6'6" averaged 10 ppg for Real Madrid last season, Chandler Hutchison 6'7" by the Suns selected one pick after Grayson Allen in the First round, and Denzel Valentine a first round pick by the Bulls.
 
Maybe the guy will get some minutes.

I'm more shocked they have a 2nd round pick to trade.

And likely nothing to do with money savings. Either a simple move on or some other move they want to make. This kind of money doesn't drive decisions for Ryan Smith.
 
I did some reading and the Jazz did get $2M cash in the Tucker deal. Not saying it makes that deal justifiable, but it makes more sense looking back at it. The Jazz could have eaten the salary and paid ~$500k for it immediately or stretched the salary over multiple years. Instead they traded a second and came back with $2M. So essentially they traded a an unprotected 2nd rounder for $2.5M. Not great considering that is the cost of a very bad second rounder....but as others have noted money now is better than money later. But they probably lost some dough in the process. At the end of the day they traded their second round pick to not pay $500k and receive $2M instead of paying $500k to keep the pick. Keep in mind, you could probably sell that pick for $2M+ down the road or you know....use it to draft someone. Another way you could think of this is that Jazz got the value of a late second rounder (which could be redeemed any year) for their 2027 unprotected second rounder. That or Ryan Smith just got himself another $2.5M for the road.

The options and consequences were a little bit different this time around. Eating Oni's salary would have cost $2.5 M. In theory they could have lowered that amount to ~$1.1M because the Lakers just did that. So when we talk about money saved, we shouldn't cite the $2.5 M number because it could have been avoided for $1.1M. Details are still coming out, but the trade has been made official and there has been no reports of pick protection and only minimal money coming back to the Jazz. If there's no protections on that pick, the Jazz need to get back about $1.4 M to make it equivalent to the Tucker trade....the slight difference being that CLE helped UTA avoid $500k whereas OKC is helping UTA avoid $1.1 M. If the cash considerations coming back to Utah is the minimum of $110k, they essentially just took $1M+ hit (or the opportunity to use the pick to draft) to pay later versus now.

TL/DR: Jazz got $2.5M in value from CLE for their 2027 2nd round pick, the Jazz have gotten $1.1M + TBD cash considerations in value from OKC.
