What's new

Game Thread Mar 18, 2022 07:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Clippers

That was one of the most enjoyable games of the year. I really liked our length out there. We were far more effective defensively with longer and more athletic people.
Everyone played well… it’s nice to have one of those wire to wire blowouts now and again right?

Great game from Rudy Gay last night. Saw exactly how he could help us in the playoffs.

Who on the roster that isn’t in the rotation is going to replace House?
I’m still skeptical on NAW but he’s shown he could give us some of the stuff House does. I don’t think he’s nearly as good on defense.

NAW is shooting the corner three well… if he simply focused on only shooting corner threes and making drives off of advantages and getting out on the break… he could be solid. Anytime he steers away from that the results are no bueno.

It’s really Forrest that I think gets pushed down the depth chart. He should be below NAW and Butler imo depending on what we need. House stays in the rotation when back.

Shocking right?

NAW looks a lot like Clarkson out there. As far as size, athleticism and the way they both move. Clarkson is obviously much better at getting where he wants in the paint and finishing (honestly there aren't many in the entire league better than him at that) but NAW has some of that ability as well. Tough to say who is the better shooter from deep. That play where NAW went for the one handed layup he looked exactly like clarkson. And the game before when NAW got the and 1 he looked exactly like clarkson. I watch almost all the games on my phone so its a small screen and on both of those plays I though for sure it was Clarkson who made the play.

What positions did we really gain length and athleticism at? Starting PF? By how much?

Prepare to revolt lol. If forrest is healthy then he is getting all the minutes we want Butler to get.
I like Forrest and based on that other thread about DM being a facilitator... if Forrest embraced that role and started throwing dimes out more and more I would be cool with him getting more minutes from the other guys. But freaking Butler needs to take some of JCs minutes and now with NAW showing some game it's going to be rough; I reckon it's a good problem to have. I just wish Quin would stop letting guards who keep shooting cold continue to do so when we have a handful of guys who have proven they can contribute at a moment's notice.

and shooting guard (mitchell is hella short). So basically we gained size/length at the two positions that had different starters. The other starters were the same as normal though.

I don’t know what the exact measurable difference is between Juancho and Bogey is. But I noticed that he appeared to be taller, much longer, and all over the court defensively. He could have a better defensive feel than bogey? Or he knows that he doesn’t have to be a top scorer for the offense? He reminded me a lot of AK47. Less athletic and offensively gifted obviously. But long and disruptive. He finished with 3 blocks and 2 steals. He and Rudy appeared to really squeeze the defense with their combined length.

Additionally, NAW/Butler/Pascall all seemed very active. I was impressed with NAW’s underrated athleticism and Butler’s feet.

I’m open to being wrong. Perhaps our regular lineup would’ve smoked the Clippers JV team too? But I thought Juancho looked great. Hope he continues to play well.

For all those who are ready to turn over half the rotation just to have the pleasure of seeing someone new/young/different on the court:

You do realize that this was the lineup during the decisive 20-0 run to end the 2nd quarter, don't you?
  • Gobert
  • Gay
  • O'Neale
  • Clarkson
  • Conley
I mean I'm thrilled like everyone else when the deeper bench performs well. And I hope that Quin turns out to be more comfortable mixing and matching as we go into the playoffs. But let's not act like Quin's playing-time decisions aren't generally solid in the larger picture.

2nd night in a row that our energy was way better than the opponent. I think it has a lot to do with the infectious energy of playing our young guys.
Without discounting that, we maybe also need to consider that the Clippers' (lack of) motivation may have played into this. There's not a team besides Phoenix that's more locked into their post-season position at this point. They're 5.5 games ahead of the Lakers for 8th, and 5.5 games behind the Wolves (maybe 6 after today) for 7th. They're not playing for anything at this point.

I was super impressed with NAW's passing. It wasn't perfect, but he could have had at least 3-5 more assists if the guy he passed to could hit a wide open shot

I think they will play together instead. both naw and jc had 5 assist vs clips. jcs 5 assist happens once in blue moon tho I could see naw replacing conley in the 2nd unit adding much more defense, length and speed.

jc
rudy/Whiteside
naw
paschall/juancho
butler/forest

looks pretty good to me

I don’t see it. NAW moves and plays like Mitchell but is way worse at finishing in traffic, he’s more explosive and much quicker. Clarkson is more cerebral in his movement, and relies more on footwork and search dribbles to get where he wants and uses an array at floaters and hook shots.

None of that is going to happen. When everyone is healthy, NAW, Juancho, Paschall and Butler won't be in the rotation...House, Gay and likely Forrest will be, and Conley's definitely going to keep playing the same amount of minutes with the second unit as he always does.
