What's new

Game Thread Apr 18, 2022 06:30PM MT: Jazz at Mavericks - Game 2

Added to Calendar: 04-18-22

Has any member of the media asked the Jazz FO why they didn’t draft Herb Jones to address the need for perimeter defense? What’s the point of Butler if we already have Clarkson, Conley, and Mitchell? Was butler insurance in case we traded Clarkson or Conley broke down? Herb Jones Seems like such a no brainer pick, especially considering what the Clippers did to us.
If the media ever asked about drafts during the playoffs I'd expect them to be fired for being dumb.

The answer is, we only take three types of players on the roster: (1) old, slow 3s and 4s; (2) rim-protecting bigs; and (3) undersized exploitable guards. Herb didn’t fit any of those categories.

We are built to score everywhere and defend nothing at all. All we can do on defense is funnel everything into the post. Literally the only thing needed to beat this Jazz squad is a guard with a quick first step and a stretch big. That’s it. I am an idiot and I just deconstructed our entire defensive philosophy.

Who gives a **** if Gobert has no offense. Look at the team built around him. If we can't win due to Gobert's inability on offense, then we've already lost.

The amount i've seen Memphis Mike Conley kill the jazz in the past, hitting shots from everywhere - where is that Mike Conley, fair enough he is older but we should be getting that Mike Conley every now and then.

Legit question, what can Quin do? When Rudy helps there is no cover for his man, the perimeter defenders have to move which would be Quin's instruction. But they don't, what other option is there? He tried House and O'Neale down the stretch which is a good move to try. What else is there?

Mitchell needs a lengthy athletic guard more than capable on defense next to him. If that means blowing away all depth then so be it, fill out the bench with turds

It’s hard to get mad at the players and coach at this point when the FO is to blame. They saw the roster’s shortcomings against the Clippers, right? Why didn’t they address the need for perimeter defense?

You’re not wrong. Then we shouldn’t be getting mad at Royce, Rudy, Spida, etc. it’s the FO’s incompetence that’s holding this team back. Why aren’t they addressing team needs?

Jazz can't let Brunson go for 40 points, and they can't let Kleber go for 25. Jazz will need to make some defensive adjustments, obviously. This is precisely the test they have to pass.

That said, it's unlikely the Mavs shoot like this again, especially in Utah.

We are messed up long term sadly. Paying for DL's idiotic moves. Giving away all the pieces for Conley. Over paying Gobert. The stupid favors reunions and oh yeah and the draft picks given away until Jesus returns

We have Royce as our starting PF, so not sure we are in the position to mock them. also they have Larry Nance Jr at the bench AND Zion who's scheduled to return, who do we have as our backup 4?
Royce is legitimately a good 5th option starter (he would be a great fit on New Orleans next to Jones actually). He's just not good as a 5th option starter who is your best perimeter defender.

Conley is just doing what every player in their 35 year old season would normally do. Don't take what MJ, Karl, Lebron, CP3 did in their age 35 season as the norm.

I can guarantee you that Conley would not be finishing his 3 year contract with the Jazz

The problem with this catching on as a narrative is that Quin is free to ignore it. NBA coaches don’t get outsmarted by coalescing narratives on Twitter. They just don’t. They’re ****ing NBA coaches and those guys are ****ing twitter comment people. Therefore, we can pretend this doesn’t exist, continue to watch it happen all series with no adjustment, and get a “well, actually…” nuanced explanation that doesn’t make any sense as to why we lost. Because it can’t be the people online recognizing this. It takes a basketball mind few have ever possessed to break this down.

I’m not asking for anyone to ask draft questions during the playoffs. I’m curious if anyone has ever asked the FO why the **** they drafted Butler last year when we already had a logjam of similar guards. The Jazz drafting Butler last year made as much sense as the Lakers drafting a SF or the nuggets drafting a scoring but slow at defense center. It was a head scratcher then. And it’s even moreso now, after we see that teams continue to exploit our lack of perimeter defense.

so my point stands, our starting 5 is not good. Royce and Mike need to go. or at least take the reserve role. Bogey too but his contract is up next season anyways.

Well, typical pathetic Jazz who can't capitalize on an opportunity for a commanding lead just like the Clippers series last year. This won't go well for the Jazz when Luka gets back.

Jazz played a good game for 44 minutes.

What the **** is it about those last few minutes that has this team all screwed up?

I put this on Quin. Get your teams' head straight and give them big crayon instructions on what to do. They obviously start eating glue in the last few minutes unless you specifically tell them not to.
