Spreading the reputation around

I've been very hampered lately when trying to give out rep for good posts. Sometimes I don't recognize the poster's name but seem to have rep'd them too recently to give them new rep.

Would it be possible to allow more rep without being forced to spread it around? Maybe by resetting the counter every 7-14 days or something?

Besides that, when I get rep I'd like to think I'm getting it from someone who doesn't just go around spreading their rep for any old swinging **** who happens to smile in their direction.

I wish there was a way to see what rep we've given. I seem to get the "you've given out too much rep" message all the time when I feel I haven't given any rep for a couple of days. Oh well, it's not a perfect system - and I'm not even sure it's better than nothing.

Gameface: The "spreading the rep around" business is so that people don't collude and just rep each other back and forth. When the new software was first installed I played around with the spreading around settings quite a bit until settling on the current setting (max of 7 reps per day, min of 10 different users before you can give it to the same person again). While there's nothing magical about these numbers, yours is the first complaint we've had in a while. Therefore unless a lot of other people chime in, I'm probably not going to change things from those numbers.

Moe: I agree that it would be useful for people to be able to see what rep they've given, and actually until your comment I didn't even realize that people can't see that. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way I can enable it. :-(

Spreading it around to five posters seems more logical than ten. Maybe there's only five people worthy of rep on this site.

:p

...the current setting (max of 7 reps per day, min of 10 different users before you can give it to the same person again)...

thanks for explaining that, it may have been posted at one time, but I'd forgotten the limits

I'm sure I'll forget again...

/sigh

5 makes more sense to me too. What you get is someone aimlessly repping people to get past the 10 so they can rep the good posters again (or neg the bad I guess). If it were at 5 then simply repping the next 5 good posts would get you there.

Just my $0.02

Would levels of rep be possible? Perhaps I'm overthinking this too much but could we give one rep point for a very good post but two rep points for an unbelievably amazing post? Ya know, like one of CJ's.

Sometimes I have to wait to spread it around before I can rep someone again.
I don't think in most cases it is collusion, it is more that personalities tend to like certain posters posts and posting styles more than others.
There are some people I rep more than others because I enjoy more of their posts, and others I rep here and there when I find their gems.
I have to admit there have been times where I go searching for posts to rep, even if they are sort of good because I found a post that was spectacular and I thought I just had to rep it but couldn't yet.

Long story short, I would probably be happier with 5-6, than I am at 10, but I won't cry myself to sleep if it stays at 10 either.

Don't get me wrong
I'm really not souped
Ego trips is not my thing
All these strange relationships really gets me down
I see nothing wrong in spreading my rep around

If we take down the "spread" to 5, probably the daily limit should also be 5 or less.

I think that works well. Spread 5 around between posters and only 5 per day max. I like it.

Nope, no way to configure it like that.

I do not approve of this new format. I think I ran into the 24 hour message maybe once or twice since the rep system started, but now I get it every day. With Jazz talk starting to heat up, there is a lot more to comment on and to +/-. I would REALLY like to see it bumped back up to 10 per day.

Seconded.

Maybe a vote?

It wasn't ever 10 per day. Or at least not since the very start of the new board. It's been at 7 per day for the last long while. (see post #4 of this thread)
