What upgrades are needed to make us a contender?

Okay listen I know it's early, but we're ten games in and we're 7-3.

We have draft picks up the ***, and this team is frankly going to at least make the play-in at this point.

My question is simple -- given the core we currently have, and the fact that we have draft picks up the ***, which pieces would cement us into a top 4 seed in the west?

Conley/Sexton/NAW
Clarkson/Beasley/THT/Agbaji
Markkanen/Fontecchio/Bolmaro
Vanderbilt/Gay
Olynyk/Kessler/Azubuike

- I think keeping Clarkson, Markkanen, Vanderbilt, Beasley, Sexton, Agbaji, Kessler, and Olynyk makes sense here. I like MAW and Tecch-9 too.
- We have lots of guard depth of course, but one idea is making a splash for SGA
- I think we could trade some of our guards for one of Toronto's PFs (Precious, Boucher, etc.)

What do y'all think?

- George

Not really sure but I don’t think you can go wrong with a 3D guy. Imagine if we had a Paul George or Tatum like guy. You could have Vando come off the bench. Or you could go mega long with Clarkson, PG, Finisher, Vando, Oly. Conley and sexton off the bench.

We definitely need to shore up the bench shooting. Beasley is meh and the Kansas rookie leaves a lot to be desired. Teams go on runs when our bench starts turning it over because there’s not enough scoring to go around Kessler.

The thunder would never trade SGA so that is a non starter. Building through the draft is still the best way to round out this roster.

We have to keep Conley. His importance goes beyond his play, which has been great anyways.

This is a tough one. Who would be reasonably available vs. who would be the perfect player regardless of team status....

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Paul George
Kevin Durant

But i'm also thinking someone who can do what Kelly Olynk does but at an elite level

Bam Adebayo, maybe

You can’t get more elite at shooting than Olynyk.

This is a fun thread for a fun season.

Honestly I’ve tried to think of what teams would keep ******** the bed and want to blow it up and take mostly picks for a good young dude.

Problem is a lot of those dudes want to be “the guy” and that means stopping the ball. This whole thing is built off ball movement and no one stopping the ball or being a black hole.

Fun to think on though.

Some of you are seriously underestimating the value of letting these guys develop without expectations this year. This is Lauri's first opportunity to be the man and we want him to continue to develop in that role because it helps him expand his game and confidence. Obviously we are exceeding expectations but this is not a championship caliber team and we shouldn't rush this. Let these guys work on expanding their games this year with very little expectations. That makes it a hell of a lot easier to work on things. Just look at Vandy. On a team trying to contend he is not going to be working on expanding his shot to the 3pt line because it hasn't been a good shot for him in the past. Last year he took 14 3's all year and I bet most of them were probably end of shot clock or end of quarter heaves that you take because you have to. I also think having no expectations is a big plus for a first year coach. He gets to work on and establish things without the fans and management second guessing his every move. The only thing that should happen this year is if we turn over and start coming back to earth we should move some of the vets if we can get an asset back for them. Other than that this roster should stay the same all year.

I think Beasley is our deadliest shooter. After struggling mightily last night he is still shooting 40% from 3 on the year on high volume. I think is the guy you want taking the last shot when you need a three to win or tie. He is good under pressure and when contested. (Ithink he hit a three earlier this year to win a game or send it to overtime)

I really like him.

Kelly is shooting amazing right now (59.4%) but this season is an outlier.
In his 10 seasons he has only cracked 40% twice before this year (40.5 and 40.6).
He has mostly been a 35/36% shooter for his career. Which is still good but not whats happening now. I doubt he can keep this up.

Ya its hard for me to really want any other players because i worry it would screw up what we have going here.

We could probably use some rim protection and/or a big wing. I dont really want a kevin durant or paul george though. We would have to give up a ton and then watch the new guy ball hog and be a diva. If things started going south they would demand a trade.

I generally disagree sip. the goal in the NBA is to WIN a championship and the greatest development for Lauri will be to learn how to be the guy on a team trying to win it all. For Vando he needs to learn how he can impact the game over 82 games and in the playoffs when the game slows down. That to me is the greatest development for any player and team. So IF we continue to win DA will eventually have to make a move to improve this team. Just like Tony Jones has said the Jaz are trying to build a winning culture.

There's definitely something to be said for letting these guys continue to just develop.

With that said Laker fans are always talking about dealing WB+2 future FRP's.

I wonder what is the best big wing they can get for Gay+THT+picks? Maybe they would hold off until the summer when those 2 will be expirings after THT picks up his option.

The Raptors are stacked with 6'7 - 6'-9 guys. Maybe Ainge can snag one of them. I like OG Anunoby but have no idea if he would come available though.

Idk it might be a product of a perfect situation for him with zero expectations and restrictions. He might be that guy that has it in him but was playing as he was asked to play instead of free and open in the offense. he seems to have a new lease on life and is playing with joy. That can make a huge difference. I mean odds are he regresses closer to the mean at some point, but a good chunk of this might just be sustainable.

You walk before you run and there isn't a move that suddenly turns this into a championship caliber team. Also you bring in the wrong piece and suddenly Lauri isn't getting the same touches and he may regress to the more passive player he has always been. This year is 100% about establishing his game and confidence level as a main guy.
