What's new

Any free agents still available that would make a difference now??

I'm not so sure they'll be any better off waiting for free agency. Hoops Hype has them at $48.2mm this offseason, without CJ's cap hold, which I believe will be more than his current salary. 125% or 150% comes to mind but I'm not sure the exact amount. Jeremy Evans is excluded, so add a million and a half or so depending on the season. Earl Watson's 2nd year is not included and I believe they'll have rights to Josh Howard as well. Even if they renounce every one of these (except Watson), they'll only have, what, roughly $10mm to sign free agents with?

The TPE is $10,890,000 + 100,000, so let's call it $11mm. Adding trade flexibility probably makes it a skosh more useful than free agency.

To be honest, I've been anticipating a move with Al to clear some more capspace. Obviously that's not a given, but I think it's a bigger possibilty than a lot of fans want to believe. So yeah, I was leaving that out. If Utah keeps Al, then you're right, they're not going to have much for capspace anyway. Even if they renounce CJ, Howard and Evans, they'll likely add 1 or 2 rookies.

So I guess what I meant, is that keeping the TPE until next season would pretty much negate moving Al to gain capspace.

So, I guess I'm 50/50 on what Utah is going to do from this point. They could use the TPE to gain an asset/s this season and move Al, or they could keep Al and maybe the greater value of the TPE will be putting ourselves in a position to facilitate a 3 team trade in the offseason.

I'm really not quite sure what KOC has up his sleeve at this point.

If I was KOC, I would want to see what Big Al was made of this season.
If he has indeed made strides in defensive prowess, and offensive eyes of the court.... then keep him.
If the offense continues to turn in black hole when he gets the ball in the post, and players continue scoring on him as easy as they did last year.... a trade will probably be in the works using that TPE.

I can't find anything saying TPE's have a cap hold. If that's the case then Jazz should wait until after free agency to use this. Can anyone think of a similar situation that we can use as a reference?

I thought the explanation by Mantis was pretty solid, but here is some more language from Coon's faq on the old CBA that supports it.

So being under the cap does not necessarily mean a team has room to sign free agents. For example, assume the cap is $49.5 million, and a team has $43 million committed to salaries. They also have a Mid-Level exception for $5 million and a Traded Player exception for $5.5 million. Even though their salaries put them $6.5 million under the cap, their exceptions are added to their salaries, putting them at $53.5 million, or $4 million over the cap. So they actually have no cap room to sign free agents, and instead must use their exceptions.

Teams have the option of renouncing their exceptions in order to claim the cap room. So in the example above, if the team renounced their Traded Player and Mid-Level exceptions, then the $10.5 million is taken off their team salary, which then totals $43 million, leaving them with $6.5 million of cap room which can then be used to sign free agent(s).

If Utah is winning and in the playoff hunt, then they should keep Al this year. However, if the team isn't in the running, I think he they should look to move him, even if he is playing great.

Agreed.
But I think if Big Al is playing well, the team will be playing well.
That is if Ty Corbin can instill in these guys that they have to move without the ball when Al is moving in the post.
Then of course Al will have to show some trust in his teammates to make a play when the double team comes.

The more I look into this the more I doubt KOC will use this TPE to acquire a difference maker. There isn't anyone attractive on the high salary teams and there aren't a whole lot of GM's under the cap willing to give up a player for nothing. I would love to see a deal with Portland for Gerald Wallace but I just don't see anything like this happening.

Then again, who would of thunk (just for you, Colton) the Lakers would give Odom to Dallas? You never know which team might be in the lead for CP, Howard or some other FA and needs to clear a veteran's salary in order to get the deal done. I think a number of teams will look to include Utah as a trade partner. KOC will have opportunities to use the exception; he should resist initial offers until teams really sweeten the pot.
