I'm not so sure they'll be any better off waiting for free agency. Hoops Hype has them at $48.2mm this offseason, without CJ's cap hold, which I believe will be more than his current salary. 125% or 150% comes to mind but I'm not sure the exact amount. Jeremy Evans is excluded, so add a million and a half or so depending on the season. Earl Watson's 2nd year is not included and I believe they'll have rights to Josh Howard as well. Even if they renounce every one of these (except Watson), they'll only have, what, roughly $10mm to sign free agents with?
The TPE is $10,890,000 + 100,000, so let's call it $11mm. Adding trade flexibility probably makes it a skosh more useful than free agency.
To be honest, I've been anticipating a move with Al to clear some more capspace. Obviously that's not a given, but I think it's a bigger possibilty than a lot of fans want to believe. So yeah, I was leaving that out. If Utah keeps Al, then you're right, they're not going to have much for capspace anyway. Even if they renounce CJ, Howard and Evans, they'll likely add 1 or 2 rookies.
So I guess what I meant, is that keeping the TPE until next season would pretty much negate moving Al to gain capspace.
