Quotes from Pelicans' forums-"I am currently throwing up and it's your fault. Win this game'

JC to the Pels just became an option. Maybe swap him for Graham and the Pels own first. Or send him there for 2 much lesser players like Hayes and the ancient Temple lol where the Pels send the Lakers pick top 5 protected instead.

The Lakers situation is just a swap right? If we're selling, and the pick is top 5 protected, then the swap is 80% nothing and best case we move up a pick or two.

I'd bet on the pelicans pick, they're a great team, but if injuries hit Zion I could see them ending up as a 45-48 win team. They ain't missing the playoffs, but could be a decent 18-23 pick

Wait.. I'm prerty sure you cannot add protection to another teams pick you own... at least not if you dont own their next years pick as well. Where would the protection transfer to otherwise?

Any pick you currently own.

You can. New Orleans traded Milwaukee’s unprotected 2025 1st they owned to Portland and put top-4 protection on it.

The protection would transfer to whatever they agree to. Most likely second round picks.

Ok thanks @One Brow and @Elizah Huge I was under the misconception you need to own the equivalent pick for next draft.

Is it just about "whatever the parties agree" or are there actual rules?

I thought I heard that you must insure the protected pick which is why pick swaps became more popular as you can offer swaps for any and all picks you control without tying up other picks.. Maybe that was just standard policy so that protected picks eventually guarantee the recipient something.

Well, for example the Timberwolves traded us their 2029 1st that is top-5 protected. Since they couldn’t include their 2030 1st in a deal that far out the pick conveys to their 2nd round pick that year if they end up in the top-5.

You do have to have the pick convey to something but it doesn’t have to be a first or a first from the same team you’re trading the pick from.

Can we even trade for the Pels' pick? They need that pick to swap with LAL. Besides, JC is worth way more than a 25+ pick, which the Pelicans pick would be.

I mean, we can, obviously, but the Pelicans pick is essentially the LAL pick. It would always be valued as such.

I hear you and the 2024 Lakers pick owned outright is what I was thinking about I guess but thought it was this draft. In fact I like that even better getting the Lakers pick outright next draft. But to do it in 2023 The pick would be the Lakers pick owned by NOP via swap rights in the proposed trade. I assume NOP would not do that without adding at least top 5 protection, but I also think unless the Lakers pick wins a spot in the top 4, they will be 6th at best ,but more likely late lottery. NOP would definitely trade that pick top 5 protected but yes we would have to provide them with the Nets or Phi late first pick we own in exchange for it and their 24 2nd or something
