Alright… I got this feeling. I think there is a chance Dame comes to the Jazz this offseason (through trade obviously). He had the article this weekend about Weber state and the whole state is like a second home… we had the question years ago where he said Utah is his second choice… I just think his brand is about loyalty and not being a sell out, and a shift to Utah wouldn’t be viewed as selling out. Portland has blown it… the management and ownership situation sucks… I also think they’d be okay letting go now as the contract is scary.

I think the contract is scary and would cause some hesitation on the acquisition price. Them doing right by Dame would also factor in.

Not sure how I’d feel about it but Dame, Lauri, Kessler is kind of a fun trio to build around. There is no nonjazz star I have loved more than Dame. As long as the price is okay I think I’d be good with a win now trade that may hurt later cuz it’s a bad contract.

You mean Dame, Lauri, Kessler, Wemby

Makes sense to me. He's going to go somewhere else eventually
I think they really need to pick between him and Simons and pick a route... and I think the Nurkic being washed thing really effed them up. I don't know that they can move off of that contract. We'd have a defensive anchor, a good big wing (or whatever Lauri is), and he'd slot into the offensive hub perfectly. Price would have to be right... but I think he can kind of help there as they would want to send him somewhere he wants to be. The LA teams have no picks (unless Lebron cashes in AD for picks), would NY want to form a Brunson/Dame duo? OKC doesn't make sense. NO has a lot of picks but there would be some moving parts there too. Miami I guess could offer picks.

Anyway... just saying... there may be some smoke signals coming out of Portland... and I am going to pay close attention.

I had a similar thought during the weekend, Dame is the only bonafide all-star that could list Utah as one of his destinations in a trade. Scared to think what the package would be, but I think if Ainge were to do it it would be because its a value move (at least short-term) to expedite the rebuild for a 33 year old.

I wonder what the trade package would look like. This off-season makes a ton of sense because we will have enough cap space to not have to fully match his salary coming back. If we didn’t re-sign Clarkson we could trade for Lillard and still have max cap space by sending a couple of guys out.

Which is kind of my thought too. If the price was the LA pick, the 2025 cavs pick, and another Cavs or Minny first... that is kind of the sweet spot. I think you could send Sexton or JC in a sign and trade with THT and do an unbalanced type deal. I want to see what Ochai has the next 20 games or so, but I'd be fine cashing in that chip if it had a lot of value to Portland. I like Ochai but I don't think he is super special.

And frankly a trade would take the pressure off Dame and his brand of loyalty, because it would be framed as the franchise starting their rebuild, not Dame bailing out. Win-win. Seriously a core of Dame, Clarkson, [High Draft Pick], Lauri, Kessler would make some noise. Add in a more consistent pass-first playmaker and bring Clarkson off the bench again, or the rookie off the bench so he can do maximum damage and we are suddenly in the mid- to upper-tier. Fun to think about for sure.

How many years does Dame realistically have left? What would that window look like?

I like Dame a lot. And he would be great, for a couple of seasons.

The Jazz traded for Conley's large contract when he was 32 iirc. Dame will be 33 in July. Dame is a better player than Mike, but I could see the same type of regret, especially paying him $60mm per year, that's too much for a 35/36 year old which in turn makes it hard to fill out a balanced roster (part of Portland's problem).

I'd rather have a more balanced roster with talent at every position, and would like to see players within a couple years of Lauri. I'm fine with trading draft capital for a star, but the combination of age and salary would make me wary of getting Dame, although he is one of my favorites, and he's a super nice guy.

As part of a bigger move that adds great talent at other positions would be a different story if we can be back in contention for the next couple of seasons, but paying that max contract though 25/26 is a tough pill to swallow. Dame alone would not get this team a chip.

This is my concern. I'd have a lot of reservations about paying any hefty price because it's likely a small window. Now if we went out and went all in on another guy in addition, then I'm on board. Like if we got Jaylen Brown (we wouldn't), but I'd be fine spending more draft capital for that.

I agree this time he is gonna leave. Portland will never give him a winning roster before time is up.

What you say makes sense. JC doesnt fit that picture for me since we would have plenty scoring potential between Dame, Lauri and Kessler playing with 2 3&D types. JC doesnt bring much more than scoring to the table, and I would complement that team with shooters who use their energy on D.

Biggest concern is the back end of his deal and the fact that we still lack that elite lockdown PoA defender who we would have to trade for as well. Is that too risky/expensive?

So the question in my mind is who is your second move? In terms of availability, you may max out at like an Anunoby guy. Does that core take you far enough? I guess part of that is determining what we land in the draft.

Probably draft pick if it is high enough.

Assuming the jazz didn’t have the first pick they’d want this years pick.

We should have just kept Donovan Mitchell.
Not sure that’s so cut and dry the truth. I know you’re just going to argue he never asked out, but IMO he did the jazz a solid by only asking for a trade privately. I can’t confirm it but his actions in the off-season make it look pretty convincing he was excited for a new start. I’m also not sold that he’d be as good this year in Utah as he has been with the Cavs this year. Not sure keeping Mitchell puts us on a road to title contention keeping Mitchell. The next time there’s a disgruntled star the jazz can out bid anyone in a trade. And looking solid for adding a solid to elite player in this years draft.

Besides adding Kessler to Mitchell feels like running it back a bit.

We will never know everything. What we do know is that Donovan linked up with Coach Hardy AFTER the Rudy trade BEFORE Don was traded. I don't think he does that if he was pushing his way out. But we will never know everything.

Kessler and Mitchell while Kessler is making his current salary is a major difference. Kessler is part of a center rotation and not the entire center rotation in a system built around a limited center.

We should have never traded Donovan Mitchell without trying to build around him first. It will go down as one of the biggest mistakes in franchise history. I like Lauri and all, but we never even tried to build around Donovan Mitchell. Ever.

I say that in light of the fact that we are discussing Dame Lillard. Donovan Mitchell is better in every single way (age, ability, etc.).
