2023 NBA Draft Megathread

I come back to Dick being the safest and most reasonable pick at 9.

Wallace would be 2nd, but taking him over Dick would be reaching to fill a harder to fill roster hole that may or may not actually need filling (see Dunn/THT/Sexton developing).

3rd option would be taking a talented faller, maybe Ausar, Walker or Whitmore, if that were to happen. Seems like there is a shot one of those 3 falls if Hendricks goes to a team like Indiana and then the Magic take someone like Black or Wallace.

4th would be taking GG at 9 if you really believe in his talent level after you decide the potential level of Dick/Whitmore/Wallace just isn't high enough to warrant a top 10 pick.

If one of the Thompsons, Walker, or Whitmore falls to us, I think you have to take them. Otherwise I would go Hendricks if available. If none of them are available then I guess we settle on Dick or Wallace, but I prefer Wallace of the two. GG or Bilal are ones I'd like at 16, but not at 9.

The reality is that with Casons lack of size/length he will have some trouble defending at the NBA level. Not to say he will be bad, or that he can't be great, but players with size on the wing will have advantages over him. It also leaves room for his defense to not translate the way you think it would.

I'm always a bit weary of quick hands defenders at the NBA level because a lot of times they have a big dropoff at the NBA level where the ballhandling is so advanced that the advantage of the defensive hands is a bit negated.

If Cason is simply just a good defender and not an elite one, is he worthy of a top 10 pick or are you better off going after a higher offensive ceiling guard like Bufkin/George?

Jrue is the high end peak but I think his most likely outcome is a prime George Hill with a little better defense and I am fine with that outcome. That would be a really solid guard and great fit with our system. Personally if I have my choice between Cason and George though then I think I go with George. I think his offensive upside with better spacing is really high.

GG sucks. Agree with the other stuff... though I may just take Dick over Wallace. The Mike Miller comp someone threw out seems like a nice archetype/comp... I think maybe you address pg in FA.

I think Bilal is there at 16... I think realistically he lands early 20s. I would be looking to use some of our cap space to move up from 28 to make sure we got him (if I am DA and believe in him). Atlanta, Miami, and Brooklyn are all candidates for that. If Brooklyn is in love with GG or Jett or Bufkin maybe they would do DFS, 21 and 22 for 16 and 28. Gets them enough flexibility to sign Cam without worrying about the tax implications. They could also look to offload Harris but I think that is a value drain not a value add like DFS is.

If GG chooses to never play defense and never make a pass, he will never be an NBA player. He has to change a ton. If you can't even say he will need to change you are out of your mind.

Pretty comical to call Whitmore a great college player. Your obsession with GG having weaknesses is comical. Yes he has weaknesses that he needs to work on. So do pretty much every prospect.

GG sucks? How dare you. I feel like GG has replaced Flip where we just assume that his obvious weaknesses and red flags are in fact strengths.

I'm curious to see how Bilal stacks up against Ausar as far as mystery boxes goes. A lot of people seem to think that Ausar isn't the same athlete and doesn't have as good of tools as Amen even if he's a better shooter atm. The problem with Bilal is the lack of experience against high level competition and the reality that he's likely going to take some time to be able to contribute, especially on offense. But that's the mystery box teams will open by drafting a Thompson Twin as well. Bilal is a lot younger, longer, and has a better looking shot. He also has tons of "man amongst boys" film against overmatched opponents.

About the only knock I have on Bilal is level of competition (can say that about a bunch of dudes), his shot is a little slow, and he is skinny. As far as mystery boxes go I feel pretty good on that one.

Flip > GG

Like with Flip he has good hands (on offense and defense), he makes good passes, he has some good moves around the basket (doesn't always finish) so if he shoots the ball well he is an nba big... maybe not a starter.

I get the idea of GG but he's almost like a reclamation project. Not starting from the ground up... you are tearing down some of the **** then starting from the ground up. If GG is successful I think it will be as a second draft guy. Call it immaturity or bad attitude... it won't just disappear usually until they have hit a wall somewhere. Give him millions and see if that helps him grow up... that seems to always work. I'll bet he has a career arc like Whiteside, Wood, etc. Sucks until he is on the cusp of being out of the league then he turns it around.

In 2-3 years go get GG from whatever team drafted him. That is my recommendation.

I guess I'm willing to gamble a little more on youth at 16, but I expect something more from 9. As for 28 I fully agree it should be traded, whether as part of a deal to move up or even a deal to trade it for a protected 2024 first round pick since we likely won't have one otherwise.
 
More propaganda. But dang!!!!.. a 57% shooting rate from 3 for the last 4 months????!?!?!?!?!. That's a remarkable shooting streak for a young prospect - translation: he's not Exum. That's it. Draft him, anyway you can Justin Zanik/Danny Ainge.

Especially considering Whitmore also does not pass, and he had better teammates.
