2023 NBA Draft Megathread

Bilal played 8 minutes in the first quarter and did basically nothing

Crazy how much better Wemby is than everyone.

Really interested to see how effective Wembys 3pt shot blocking translates to the NBA. Seems like it's basically impossible for French league players to shoot over him if he's within 10 feet.

I honestly don't think the surgery will hurt Whitehead's draft stock. Someone will still take him top 25 for sure. He's very young, talented and has a lot of potential.
it absolutely hurts his stock. if you're right and he gets taken at say, 24, it probably means he would have been taken at 15 without the surgery. but yeah, nba teams are always scared off by that stuff - at least to an extent.

And its the second surgery for the same injury. That is always problematic.

I don't think that's true at all. A 5 month surgery recovery timeline isn't dropping you that far.

I think this is the bigger issue and why I would be scared to draft him at this point (although we absolutely should if he is there at 28). It seems like the chronic injury stuff is when surgeries don't go well and having to have multiple injuries for the same thing is a big red flag in my opinion.

multiple surgeries in the same spot also leads to more scar tissue.

The thing I've learned the most about watching Wemby and Bilal is that French commentary >>>>>> English commentary. I don't understand French, but the French dude's actually enjoy the basketball.

I do wonder if these Bilal games are helping or hurting his stock....GM's love the "mystery man" stuff in the draft and I wonder what's more impressive: dominating the Junior in the man amongst boys situation or having an Exum like role for the Senior team. It is kinda boring to watch his senior games because there's almost no action on offense for him. There's not a ton of good or bad to form an opinion on. If he was in a different role I suspect we'd see some more amazing moments showing off his athleticism but also some cringy moments as he's still very raw. An optimist would say he's helping his team in a defined role and he could do more if he was allowed to. A pessimist would say he's not allowed to because he's not good enough. There's truth to both sides.

If Mets advance far into the playoffs (they are the second best team in their league), there may be no predraft process at all for him...so his opportunity to rise/fall is heavily dependent on the remainder of the season. It's good to know that Ainge was there in person because that might be the only opportunity to do so before the draft.

it's not just a run of the mill surgery - it's a second surgery for the same injury. yes, it will cause him to drop. if you don't think nba teams see that as a red flag, i want some of what you're drinking.

So if Utah takes him at 16 that means he would have gone 9th?

It might matter to some teams, but that doesnt mean it will matter to all teams. There's also more information on these things than just "oh well it's the 2nd surgery" teams will be able to see the actual information.

The kid probably just rushed his return playing for Duke and needed to get some stuff fixed. It's not like his body is broken, he was able to play solid basketball.

yes, but that won't happen. he'll be there in the mid/late 20s because news of this second surgery will scare some teams off.

It means Dariq will miss his first summer league and probably fall training camp. Assuming he heals up well enough it puts him a bit behind the curve in his rookie season and he'll need to come along a bit slower.
