2023 NBA Draft Megathread

If we got a Hendricks/Walker/etc. type at #9 I'd gladly trade #16 and #28 for Wallace.
I think those guys are the preference on the draft board but may not be there. There is a chance we are looking at either Wallace/Black/Dick at 9... and that is when you would potentially select Cason.

Teams can get overly spooked on an injury and backs can be scary... which maybe means there is actually like a 5% chance he falls to 16 without a trade. I agree though... I'd swap 16/28 for Cason fo sho.

I usually feel the same. Best to take a swing for the fences because the payoff is immense if/when you hit.

That said, Cason isnt that for me but I would still very much consider him at 9 depending on how it all pans out. Mostly because if he hits his ceiling, thats the kind of dude that absolutely helps a team go get a chip. The stars win it but dudes like that are necessary IMO. Love the kid.
he's the perfect fit next to Lauri.

My philosophy on the draft is that its primary purpose is to add star-level players to the roster on team-friendly contracts. I'm always going to lean towards guys with high upside--e.g., GG Jackson, Bilal Coulibaly, Keyonte George, etc.

Why the hate on Brandon Miller? Seriously it puts a damper on your other takes which have been pretty good.

he decided early on in the college season he wasn't a fan, that miller had specific warts, etc - cooled off a tad when Miller continued to dominate and produce - but ultimately he can't or is unwilling to shake it off. it is what it is. ferguson does have good takes, you just ignore anything brandon miller related. and that's okay.

Imagine if we got #3 or 4 in the lottery picking Amen and then could convert 16 and 28 for a 2nd pick in the late lottery to get Ausar. Of course it is super unlikely and there would be shooting concerns, but after playing together for all their life that chemistry would be amazing together on the floor. Amen, Ausar, Lauri, Kessler and plug in a shooter. The defense and size would be elite. Great court awareness and ball movement, We would need a really good shooting bench. Amen supposedly plays the 1 and 2 while Ausar can play the 1, but is mainly a 2 or 3. That helps flexibility in lineups too.

so you're saying if the jazz get say, Hendricks at 9, you'd trade the 16 and 28 for like the 12 or 13 in hopes of grabbing Wallace?
That is what I was saying. But it really depends on the board and how the FO feels about it. I don’t really wanna give up Bilal potentially to move up a couple spots. So it’s all fluid, nothing more so than my opinions or thoughts on what we should do.

And I guess I’m just saying in that Dick/Wallace/Black scenario, that Black has become my obvious pick. Seems pretty likely the board does fall like that too.

I'd love to pair the Twins for the funs of it and stuff, but I think it's better for them not to be together.

He's really hung up on Miller's early season struggles around the rim even though they improved as the year went on.

Of those three I would go Wallace then Black then Dick
Black is the only one of these guys that I actually saw play a little bit and was extremely unimpressed.

But college is like an entirely different game. Black has the size and athleticism I’m looking for in a top 10 pick. And it’s pretty common to see draft people put him in the top 5. So there’s gotta be something there. HH sold me on his work ethic and such as well.

Hollinger on Black:

I am possibly irrationally out over my skis here, but I love this guy. Black reminds me of Jason Kidd at times, a big, smart, defensively active guard who impacts winning in so many other areas that the lack of a jump shot becomes secondary. Black is also among the younger players in this cohort, with an early 2004 birthdate, and thus time is on his side when it comes to finding his stroke.

Black is a huge point guard who could potentially also play on the wing but moves his feet well enough on the perimeter that he can legitimately guard the one at the pro level. He combines that with some quick leaping, zipping off the ground to surprise shooters with shot contests and using verticality in the basket area very effectively.

Offensively, I’ve been a big fan of Black all year because he can handle, pass and make correct decisions. His handle can get a little wobbly at times, especially in his right hand, and he made too many turnovers overall, but some of that stems from his limited shooting forcing him to drive into the teeth of the defense.

Black has a slow release, a pronounced ball dip and seemingly not a ton of confidence in the entire enterprise, but we’re not talking about DeAndre Jordan here: Getting his shot to at least a 1-in-3 proposition in a two-year span shouldn’t be a massively daunting task.

If he can do that, his size, feet and IQ should more than take care of the rest and make him a fixture in the league for years.

I've rotated a bit... I like Black a lot... I just watched more Arkansas than any other team and it was maddening. Its a mix of college basketball, a horrible outside shooting team, and his limitations... so its not all on him. It just became too hard for me to decide how much of that **** show on offense was on him and how much was just their drives to nowhere. I would honestly be happy with any of the three. Black is by far the most unique guy in that range with is equal parts awesome and terrifying.

Hollinger’s big board:

Whitmore at 3
Miller at 4
Black at 5
Amen at 6
Lively at 8
Hendricks at 9
Bufkin at 10
Walker at 12
Wallace at 13
Bilal at 17
Lively was a big turn for Hollinger btw... he has been a "don't draft centers in the lotto" guy in the past. Maybe changing his tune a bit.

The thing that worries me with Black is that he is passive as a scorer/shooter. His form isnt the worst in the world and certainly workable, but a lot of his shooting issues came from obvious confidence issues.

It's pretty easy for me to see him being so worried about his shot that he fades into the background of a team and becomes a wide open spot-up shooter who isnt putting his impact on the game he is capable of.

Ausar will probably shoot well enough to justify the Andre Iguodala comps.
Amen will be a drive-and-kick player (e.g., rookie Ja Morant) until he learns to shoot.
Anthony Black, I'm not sure. Do you pretend he's Ben Simmons and let him run your show?
Black, if he’s ben Simmons with no catastrophic mental issues he’s a top pick in this draft
