Summer League Thread

I’m not going to necro-bump the draft thread right now but with hindsight (of how the draft order played out) I would’ve drafted Cason with the first pick (trading down or not), Whitmore with the second, and GG with the third.

(Cason is there to balance out the knuckle-headedness and bridge to the good of the culture that’s here)
We need to be a little patient here on GG… we will see where his head is at when he hits some adversity that lasts more than a couple weeks. Talent wasn’t the big issue.

Oh I know. But he at least has knees attached to an elite NBA body, biomechanics, and innate ball talent.

Swinging on talent with a guy with huge,
clear negative knee indicators is like swinging without a bat. Swinging on GG is swinging with a metal bat that he uses as a bong/pipe.

It depends on what you mean by talent. If he's trying to be a star scorer, talent is definitely an issue. I feel like the key for GG is to come to terms with his talent level and realize he has to make it another way.

I guess what this speaks to is how uncomfortable I am that the success of our draft relies on Keyonte being a star. Otherwise, I don’t know what we just did with the three picks.

Like, the Jazz were already deep in talks for Collins and they take Hendricks? All while knowing they’re keeping KO? It’s just… blech. If we’re passing on high-end talent that’s fine but let’s maybe give them a chance to play?

One Summer game and people are losing their minds. Happens every year. How about we wait a while before claiming GG is All Star talent. The Jazz were not the only team to pass on him multiple times. The kid did himself no favors with the way he behaved if the reports are true. I hope the kid matures and has a great career. Many teams have selected someone who flops while passing on a future star. It happens every draft.

"College player will have to adapt his game to make it in the NBA" is such a rare situation. GG the only player in the history of college basketball who will have to do that.

Do you guys know what the word "gaslight" means. It is not psychological manipulation to have a disagreement on a basketball player. It is actual (an attempt at least) gaslighting to invent a fake scenario and use it to try to manipulate the conversation.

It does seem pretty wild we took Brice over GG.

Hopefully Brice's knee is OK long-term, but taking a bet an 18 year old matures seems safer than going with the guy who has had 3 knee surgeries before age 20.

JHS: The Tony Bradley of wings.
I'm guessing the Lakers will turn JHS into a player by year 3. He is younger and has more tools coming into the league than either Caruso or Reeves. Neither one of them are super athletes either.

I think sometimes with age comes maturity and stupid can be cured... but many times its harder to heal stupid than a knee. You are more educated on the body stuff than I am. I don't love the knee issues but maybe a reduced load on those knees and a professional medical team can cure Brice. He's certainly very talented and productive. I'm fine with the bet they made. I think we are clearly averse to certain types of personalities. I think that may have hurt Cam and GG more than medicals or talent. It can certainly be too risk averse... so I get someone having an issue with it. I'd have to know what it is like behind the scenes with GG or Cam and talk with the people around them to see if I thought it was stuff they'd grow out of.

People seem to agree with me this is what happened.

What say you @Ferguson_Mellochill ?

I still had KqWin on ignore, and I'm catching up. What's the question here? GG's talent is creating separation for a guy who's 6'9" / 220 lbs and decently athletic. He's able to create looks for himself. There's value in that. How many of those shots he makes matters, but it's hard to draw conclusions about how well he'll make shots 3 years from now.

In the end, the question is whether he can be a high-level scorer at the NBA level. We won't know this based on Summer League or even the G-league. He's got the skills to do it though. He's also a guy I think who wants to be good.

Now that we're no longer having violent pre-draft debates, I'll take guys off ignore.

From what I've seen GG has a great attitude and suspect the immaturity thing is even overblown. For as I know all this spurred from an IG video where someone asked why they weren't getting him the ball and he said "Man I don't know" Not the best answer but cmon.

FYI -- I'm overreacting to summer league with GG Jackson because it's part of my schtick. He's got a long road to actually get playing time on a team as deep as Memphis.

I'm not sure what all counted against GG in the pre-draft process, but it seems to be the same issue that Talen Horton-Tucker had and Brandon Boston had. They were young and were inefficient as freshmen. That said, GG still should have gone in the 1st round.

This was also a deep draft. Guys like Max Lewis, Sidy Cissoko and Leonard Miller were all 1st-round quality players. If GG had not jumped up a draft class, it would have helped him in a number of ways. He'd be older and more mature. He probably wouldn't go to a program like South Carolina at the last minute. And also, he'd be considered a top-10 guy in next year's weaker draft class.

Let the overreactions flow. I actually want to see “gaslight” become a thing here lmao.

Isn’t that what you did though? You made it seem like others weren’t remembering correctly.

They weren't. It was literally a made up scenario by Cy . If I made up a scenario about you, can I then say you are gaslighting me if you said that wasn't true?

That's also not how Cy is using that term anyways lol. This is a direct quote:

We definitely had people on here gaslighting us that his footwork/ability to get shots off wasnt a talent.

We have a disagreement on the value of GG's shot creation. It's not about remembering or not remembering if this made up scenario was actually real. I don't consider GG's shot creation great "talent" because it doesn't amount to good offense. I would say something similar about Clowney's 3 point shooting, for example. I love Noah Clowney, but I am definitely not calling him a talented shooter because he happed to take a bunch of 3's and shot poorly. I think people can have disagreements on what constitutes talent without it being gaslighting.
