Hey Everyone... Lets Chill on Writing Hendricks Off... TIA

As long as we are talking about Hendricks we might as well talk about Sensabaugh as well. I wonder if we end up even seeing him in the preseason at all. He is the rookie that I was most looking forward to seeing because he had such an advanced scoring repertoire in college.
 
In this cluster **** of a preseason we also haven't seen any of the two ways, none of the exhibit training camp signees in addition to Sensabaugh. I would like to see if Romeo has anything to bring to the table.
 
Luka Samanic's contract is non-guaranteed and his guarantee date is in a couple weeks. I think this is part of the reason why he's being given an opportunity in pre-season games. If the Jazz cut him loose, I think Hendricks will pick up his minutes. Those might be spotty minutes, but still.

Drafting Hendricks is like drafting Jerami Grant or maybe Dorian Finney-Smith. He's got the tools to be an impactful player, but he'll need some development reps. He's also behind Lauri, Collins and Olynyk in the Jazz's deep rotation.
 
I think this is a pretty interesting thread so far.

The premise is don't overreact to two preseason games where the guy barely played. But I feel like what is actually happening in the thread is Hendricks 'defenders' are coming in here to temper expectations, which could really only be based on said preseason games, right? So like the opposite thing of the threads premise.

These posts from the defenders about playing the long game, and where he sits in the pecking order, etc. If those posts were made on draft night it would be considered an extremely 'hater' point of view and someone who did not like the pick to be so down on him and talking about Hendricks needing to beat out Luka Samanic.

So, one way or another, since draft day the expectations, reasonable opinions, analysis, etc. on Hendricks has obviously shifted around here, perhaps in a pretty major way. Yet we literally only have the two preseason games of sample size that we are not supposed to be overreacting about...
 
In the very limited sample size we have on Hendricks I would say he looks to be a very good rebounder, very fast, very long, and has a nice looking shot for his size. He also looks very lost on where to be on the court, and has not been aggressive at all.

I don't think it's unfair to question why he can't beat out Simone and Luka, but I think you have to take a ton in to consideration before thinking it means too much. If he hasn't beat them out for rotation minutes by the end of the year then I think it's very fair to be concerned.

FWIW, I was never that excited about Hendricks in the draft. I thought he'd be a rotational 3D guy on the wing, but my expectations were never that high. That said, he's 19 and he's going to need time to develop. That's the case for most rookies. Guys coming in and claiming regular minutes right away is really the exception rather than the norm.

Yea, not meaning to call out anyone specifically. Except you @Handlogten's Heros!!

If we aren't supposed to overreact to an insufficient sample size then really nothing at all should have changed since his name was announced of draft night. why would we question the pick, or maybe do something different if we had a do over if we believe in the threads premise? What other info is informing that opinion?

As the starter of such thread and as a big supporter of the TH... let me just clarify... I am here to tell people to chill on writing the guy off or say it was a bad pick. Its okay to be disappointed a bit.. what changed from now since draft night is that he couldn't play in summer league. So we have more data on some other dudes than we do Taylor. I would not say things have shifted dramatically. In a re-draft today he'd likely go right about where he did.

Our situation is a little different... so the rookies aren't going to fall into playing time... If he is struggling in the G league mid-season and looks like **** in spot minutes with the varsity team... go ahead and react accordingly... but a rookie with no summer league losing time to two guys playing for their NBA lives... in 2 preseason games.... calm yo *******.

I would say it is the opposite. Most top 10 guys come in and get regular minutes right away. By regular minutes I mean at least 10-15 minutes a game. Unfortunately he is in a unique situation where we already have 4 legit bigs worthy of minutes.

I also wanted a repository of ****** overreaction takes in one spot... so I can bump the thread later. Like the one where a certain poster decided Kessler needed to go to the G league.

Well, let's see what happens if the Jazz don't pick up Samanic's guarantee and if they trade out Fontecchio. By mid-season, Hendricks could be in the rotation, much like Agbaji last year.

I really hope that they pick up Luka's option. He has shown me enough that I would keep him around for at least this season.
