He was a known monster and continues to be one. Stealing from americans (trump university), stealing from charity (trump foundation). Grab em by the *****. Talks of shooting people (when the looting starts the shooting starts, saying we should execute a general, saying he could shoot someone on 5th avenue and not lose any supporters). Cheats on all his wives while they are pregnant. Sleeps with porn stars and pays them off to keep quiet. Sexual assault loss in court. His business cheats (trump organization). Tries to overturn/steal an election. Sits back for hours and watches an attack on our capital while doing nothing. He is a narcissistic sociopath. 91 (current) indictments and he gets more popular. (and thats just a quick rundown off the top of my head for starters. Could go on and on and on) He is a popular monster. And he was elected. lol. Its kinda crazy how wrong you are on this hamilton take. He was talking about a type of person in his quote (which is obvious) not democracy.

In a fiery response, defense attorney Abbe Lowell accused Weiss of “bowing to Republican pressure" in the case.

“Based on the facts and the law, if Hunter’s last name was anything other than Biden, the charges in Delaware, and now California, would not have been brought," Lowell said in a statement.

The White House declined to comment on Thursday’s indictment, referring questions to the Justice Department or Hunter Biden’s personal representatives.

Because Alexander Hamilton. He could have said "democracy dangerous, yo" but instead we got "those who sit astride the hobby horse of popularity are ever without Catalines and Cæsars". Maybe Hamilton was concerned the general populace didn't know the difference between a republic and a democracy so using words they didn't understand wouldn't help his argument. Hamilton was so fearful of democracy that he wanted the US Senators and US President to be lifetime appointments like our Supreme Court Justices are.

You mean the guy who is not in office because of the safeguards provided by the structures the founders put in place a quarter millennia ago? Yes, those structures were put in place for the preservation of liberties against people like Trump. They aren't perfect but they have worked better than any other system in modern history.

Meanwhile in pre-war Germany, Hitler won election and used his ability to play to the crowd to do away with any constraints or system to replace him. In a nutshell, that is the difference between a democracy and a republic. In a democracy, those having popular opinion on their side can do anything. In a republic, even those having popular opinion on their side are still constrained by superseding structures. Democracy isn't about voting. Democracy is about what having popular support will allow you to do.

I think we should use democracy way more than we currently do.
I definitely think I should have the opportunity to vote for Phillips in a primary (and I definitely would as I said earlier in this thread). I hope I get that chance.
I also think the country should simply vote on many of the big ticket items like abortion, marijuana legalization, etc. I think we should use popular vote (like we do in local elections) rather than electoral college to choose the president.

So in response, I agree with Phillips that his name should be on a primary ballot as an option along with Biden and others. (I don't care if Biden attends debates or not however. I think we all have already formed our own opinions about him.)

Yes, he’s talking about personality types like Donald Trump. Distinguishing between constitutional republic vs. direct democracy isn’t really relevant to Hamilton’s warning. He’s warning us about demagogues. Each of us has the right to vote for an individual we desire to see as president. We vote for that specific office. The system we have certainly permits people to arise who will resemble the type of individual Hamilton is describing. You are interpreting it correctly. It’s not rocket science, and no, the rise of an individual like Trump is not a danger than can only happen in a direct democracy. Of course it can happen in our constitutional republic.

Heck, with the development of mass communication, things like television and the internet, it becomes even easier for such personalities to wield influence. Living in a society torn apart by the culture wars we are experiencing, that is when the time is ripe for the emergence of an authoritarian demagogue, with the very traits Hamilton described. None of this is something that we are protected from, simply by living in a constitutional republic. We are not protected by our own lack of education, we are not protected by our lack of critical thinking skills, we are not protected by the ability of a Trump to tell disaffected people exactly what they want to hear, including that it’s OK, and to be encouraged, that we hate fellow citizens that do not support the demagogue….
