Jackpotting Around Podcast: Episode 6 - Tony Jones From The Athletic

As always thank you for the amazing and in depth feedback.

For the last part, it definitely felt a little clunky towards the end there. When there is three guys on the pod together it’s hard to navigate because after one guy talks the other two want to comment on it afterwards. Tony also answered some of our questions we were going to ask through other answers of different questions. We could have went on for hours but we were trying to be mindful of his time and I think HH was just trying to see if there was any last things I wanted to hit on before letting him go.
Are y'all recording this with webcam so you can see each other or is it purely audio?

It wasn't a big deal and something you guys will figure out as you go.

Pretty awesome that you guys have gotten to this point already. Really amazing work, and I appreciate what you are doing. Having Andy and Tony on is a crazy good start to a podcast. I would have loved for a deeper dive, but I know there is a balance between pushing/making your guest comfortable and I suppose as a fan podcast it's more important to make the guest comfortable. I always appreciate listening to Tony's opinions on basketball. Even if I don't agree with them, he makes good points.

I thought the very end of the Pod was the best part when he answered what his life is like during trade deadline time. It sounds like the, "work" he describes in the first of the pod is relationship building, and then the news breaking becomes the result of that, "work" where people within the organization will use him to break news vs others. At least that's what I took from him sitting by his phone waiting for calls/texts vs trying to pull information.

One recommendation I would have, and take it for what it's worth, but I think how you are interacting with each other is still a little clunky. There were times where you didn't know who was supposed to be talking or asking questions or some awkward pauses and lots of "do you have any more questions?" I think it could flow a lot better if instead of a cohost arrangement you had more of a host/producer arrangement.

As always thank you for the amazing and in depth feedback.

Flow is definitely a concern. I also knew we were up against the clock and had a bunch of things we wanted to get to. We coordinated on who was going to ask what and I just wanted to make sure I didn't cut @Elizah Huge off if there was something he really wanted to get to.

Part of the challenge is we have no idea what these guys are like. So if they are giving good long answers then I think you focus on 2-3 main subjects. We probably had too many questions on our agenda... so some of that is keeping the trains moving when we should just be focused on talking in depth. Tony gave long good answers and I was worried he may not be into it (I have major bird brain imposter syndrome at tiems)... so we were prepared to hit on too many subjects if answers were brief.

As always I appreciate the feedback. Negative positive and otherwise. We are figuring out what this is with everyone else.

That was a fun episode guys! I’m impressed both by your ability to get some really great guests so early on, as well Tony’s and Andy’s willingness to join the show.

I’m a little surprised not to see anyone here chiming in with a guess as to who the Jazz were in the process of making a deal for during the deadline. We may never get an answer of course, but the one name that came to my mind was Khris Middleton.

Middleton doesn't make sense if they were worried about Simone not being on the timeline

100% Agreed. It was just a name that came to mind while listening that I didn't really think through beyond him being an unexpected but plausibly available player that fits the criteria Tony had mentioned.

Nice work!

If you're not already, in terms of feedback, would suggest you ask your early guests for feedback as they do these interviews a lot. Do it as you hang up - after the recording. I'm sure Andy or Tony would have tried to help out and offer a nugget or two to make the experience better for them, if applicable, which helps with your next guest... Just a thought.

I’m embarrassed I didn’t think of that. Not only do you get feedback but it shows kind of a teamwork type of thing. That’s a great suggestion.

Andy would have said... if you're late as a host, don't rehash **** LOL
That day was an absolute logistics disaster on my end… and honestly not my fault but hoping Andy gives us a second chance sometime.

I have some guesses. Tony didn’t tell us after or before the call though… they are purely guesses. I think it could have been:

Mikal bridges
Cam Johnson
Deni Avdija
Herb Jones
Jerami Grant

It was sub all star but better than starter level… some of those are big stretches but some of those names were bandied about at various times.

I think the quality of the player could override the timeline.
