Is the contender with high expectations and a locker room full of egos necessarily best place for a rookie coach though? However smart he can be coaching Boston could mean as much a fast success as a failure at the beginning of the career.

He may have those thoughts but It's also impossible to know ahead of time that what played out in Boston was going to transpire.

And - who knows if he actually was next in line? Obviously, he's DA's guy, but maybe he wasn't Brad Stevens'? I'm sure if they really wanted Hardy for the long-term, they could have moved on from Mazzulla in the offseason and made Will an offer he couldn't refuse. Sitting NBA coaches don't take other jobs often but it does happen.

Honestly, Boston probably could get any coach on the planet with the nucleus they have in place.

I think he’s good. If he isn’t awesome from day one he’s seen as a buffoon. No pressure here so exceed low expectations and you are the next thing. Dude is gonna get PAID on his next deal and he’s like 25 lol.

This. Noone expects Hardy to coach a winning team when Ainge keeps trading away the talent.

My guess is that he would have gotten the job and would have done very well. I agree he is fine but he has to wonder what if. Being in Boston over these last few years is a lot better than being in Utah.

Maybe not, but do you think that’s what he’d be thinking about? Or is it more likely he’d be thinking about being the young, rookie coach who wins a championship (the youngest in any relevant NBA history) and gets lots of attention as a prodigy with a very long career in front of him?

As alluring as it may sound to coach for an obscure franchise that has no clue what its plan is and how leisurely the pressure is off, guys are competitive and want to win and cement a legacy. Win a title as the youngest coach since Riley to do so (and reasonably younger) with a historic franchise getting media attention and you can solidify a minimum of a 25 year HC career off of that at his age.

Instead he gets to look at next season where the goal is to determine whether or not we’ll convey our pick.
