John Collins is close to the worst possible fit you could dream up for the Kings so I imagine the coaching staff told the GM that they should not, lol.
As of now, the return for the Mitchell trade looks really disappointing.
The Jazz traded Mitchell for
Lauri Markkanen (two great years, but during a tank. Currently having a down year and unclear trade value)
Collin Sexton (two good years, but during a tank. Will probably be turned into a late first)
Ochai Agbaji (traded along with Kelly Olynyk for a late first, roughly was traded for a mid second in value)
2026 and 2028 swaps (almost certainly extinguished)
2025, 2027, and 2029 picks (likely turned into the 2031 Suns first)
So our total value from the Mitchell trade is now
Whatever Lauri is traded for
Whatever Sexton is traded for
One middle of the second round pick
The 2031 Suns first
As Sexton and Lauri being good provided no value as they were trying to tank.
Hopefully Lauri can regain his trade value next year to be moved at the deadline and make the trade look OK again.

Crazy how he averages 4 APG when he never passes.
He's a solid fit.
If you are playing Sabonis at the 5, it's hard to get a 4 that fits perfectly unless you have someone like Chet Holmgren.
Collins can space the floor, play backup 5 against bench units, has added passing to his game, and can finish inside. It's not perfect, but they cant do much better currently.
Well they have to try or they might as well do a major selloff and enter another 10 yers of tankingIt's not just that Sabonis-Collins is a bad fit defensively, it's that you have to protect DeRozan defensively so it becomes even more awkward.
The Kings have a bunch of solid players that just aren't good enough to be big time guys on a contending team and Collins would just be another one of those guys.
Downplaying Lauri is silly. He has plenty of value. As of now, the return for the Mitchell trade looks really disappointing.

He might not have great value for another couple years when more maxes under the new cap get signed.Downplaying Lauri is silly. He has plenty of value.
We are tanking. Of course his stats will take a hit when he is playing next to Cody Williams and Patti Mills. Besides, we don't WANT him to have a great year.
It would be interesting if the Kings end up losing Fox because they couldn't quit Trey Lyles. .For what it’s worth what the Sacramento guys are reporting is what I had heard on the Utah side as well that a John Collins deal was all but done.
