Following Potential 2025 Draftees

Kas is elite because of his ability to hit step back/off the dribble 3. If he can hit it in the NBA it opens up all the other cool playmaking he can do.

I like De Larrea ok (I believe I was one of the first to bring him up in this thread), but Kas without the step back isn't quite as interesting.

Kas isn't going to create space on NBA defenders with his stepback like he did in college, imo, especially if he isn't a real threat to drive the ball. Kas will benefit from NBA pace and space, but his athleticism and ability to pressure the rim do look a bit limited. Kas might look a bit similar to Podziemski in the pros, imo.

I think Podz is a good medium outcome for Kas.

Memphis draft picks is lottery protected and Ja twisted his ankle in the first play in game.

Grizzlies haven't beaten a Western Conference playoff team since January. If you were a Grizzlies fan would you want to tank the last play in game to keep the pick?

They might be hungry for a playoff showing, given what happened last year. OKC is a beast of an opponent though. It could be a short series.

Except that the comparison makes no sense when you take time to think about how different the shooting profiles of Hawkins vs Johnson are.

It wasn't hard to guess Hawkins wouldn't translate. UConn's offense was dedicated to getting him open off screens and they haven't done that for him in New Orleans. He hasn't expanded his skill set at all, so he just a guy who is going to make the occasional 3 here and there (his open shooting is still good, he just can't make anything contested or off the dribble). And he can't guard well enough to stay on the floor and dictate that a team should feature him offensively. I think he shot something like 30% off the dribble his last year at UConn.

Johnson has a more complete shooting profile. The shooting will translate.

I said as much in my post, you're not telling me anything new. The point is, shooting is a highly variable thing and it's one of the hardest things to predict. I believe Johnson is going to be a good shooter which is literally the first sentence in the post you're responding to. I also know that shooting is something difficult to pin down. If there is one skill that's hard to predict that will translate, it's shooting. We know this from history. You can believe in something, but also acknowledge that some things are subject to variability.

It's not a yes/no question of it will translate. It's also the extent to which a shot will translate. He is elite of the elite as far as prospects go, no doubt, but that doesn't automatically mean he will be elite of the elite in the NBA. There's a lot of level's in between "not translating" and elite of the elite. It's hard to imagine him being a bad shooter in the NBA, but could he end up more like a Clarkson or Poole level shooter? I think he will be better, but those are outcomes that could happen. Even if the shooting does translate 1:1 and he is an elite shooter, he needs to add more to his game to be a true star player. It's difficult to be efficient with his shot profile even if he's an elite shooter.

Yes, they aren’t beating OKC anyways.

I tend to agree. De Larrea's production warrant's attention, but the film on Kas >>>>.

I do wonder how things might be if Kas's highs and lows came at a different time of the season. He started out hot, but then really fell off after returning from injury. I would be concerned if it was just a case of facing tougher competition, but Kas's numbers are consistent against top 50 opponents so I don't think it's a level of competition thing.

My prediction is we pick 5th, Ace slides to us there, Jazz say that is who they wanted all along, and Jazzfanz has a meltdown.
If we pick fifth and Ace falls into our lap I’d be over the moon happy.

I want no part of Kas. I don’t think he’s best player available at 5 and isn’t a position of need.
