Solving For Tanking, We're smart, let's figure it out

Just do The Wheel. It's a perfect system. It solves tanking and makes trading picks a more exact value proposition and not a crazy bet cycle.

The Wheel is dead. There's too many people in front offices around the league whose employment depends on being able to sell hope and get-rich-quick schemes (in the form of draft jackpots) to suffering fanbases. The Wheel would decimate that industry. You'd actually have to get to work and start improving your team. We can't have that! It would involve all kinds of nasty words like "accountability" and "pressure".

Every team can have a lottery pick nearly every other year....

It would allow middle of the road teams to be able to sell hope and actually put a good product on the court.

It's such a no-brainer solution, but we are so hardwired to be addicted to gambling odds-based outcomes.

Exactly. "A lottery pick nearly every other year" would be a tough sell for FO's of bad teams. The whole draft-industrial complex has grown so massive and become so important for the modern NBA ecosystem that you have to keep it running constantly. Fanbases are like addicts they need those constant dopamine hits while surfing the web for mock drafts, podcasts and highlight videos of blue chippers.

Very true.

Hey, I love the Wheel. But it's not gonna happen. Too much money to be made on side hustles for everyone involved.

I don't really get how tanking is a viable "side hustle". It works on us addicts, but for gen pop it has to be a massive turnoff and a money loser ultimately.

Majority of Jazz fans are anti-tank I’d bet. They just want a good product on the court whether that’s a first-round flame out or not.

By side hustles I meant all the podcasts, websites, tv shows, interviews, message boards etc. that keep the massive draft-related business running. That's precisely the part that the addicts keep injecting in their veins. Many of them turn into hardcore tankers and by that point, they're usually beyond saving. And the lottery is an integral part of it all.

IMO you're underestimating the amount of people who have been sucked into the draft gambling / lottery side of the NBA experience. The season itself can be pretty boring for fans of non-contending teams. But there's always something happening behind the scenes.

Im anti tank in a general sense. I hate it. I think it unfortunately should be done this season though.

Im also not a championship or bust guy. I love the playoffs.

Making lotto odds include multiple years + some sort of cooldown on winning the lotto makes a ton of sense to me. It’s not perfect, but I don’t really see a downside.
