I think this is the dumbest thing the league has done in a long time. Am I alone in that?

Congrats to the winners on getting $500K apiece. That is awesome, especially for the end of the bench guys.

But basketball isn't soccer. And I don't understand why the league is trying to take the game in that direction. Feels more like a gimmick than anything else.

For the greats - rings matter, and gold metals matter. Could give a **** about the NBA Cup.

Now get off my lawn.
 
It’s fine. It’s an attempt to try something new and inject a little more excitement and meaning to the regular season, which I can appreciate.

Fans obviously aren’t putting too much stock into it right now, but I can envision it carrying a bit more prestige if it sticks around long enough. That would be a win for sure.
 
I think the concept of an in-season, single-elimination tournament is great.

With regard to how the current NBA cup is structured, I think there's a lot to be desired.

I think it would prefer it if, for example, some early part of the regular schedule were used to determine a field of 16 teams. Then, those 16 teams would all go to some region* for a single-elimination tournament. There would be no more than one or two days off between games.

*I realize that 16 teams in the same city would probably create too many logistical problems. But, e.g., you could have all of these teams in the tri-state area playing at a small handful of different gyms, you could have all of them in Southern California, etc. Any acceptable region could enter into a rotation for the NBA Cup.

They are trying to raise flagging interest especially from fans of teams that won't have a chance at a title so it gives them something to cheer for. Look at the finalists, the Spurs and Knicks? Rejuvenate the fan base and give them something to root for. It is the dumbest thing the NBA has done since they completely ****ed up the all star game by letting the multi-millionaire children determine how they want to play in their personal playground. I am surprised it didn't end up in an 80's-era gave of HORSE, like the old commercials. The ancillary things they are adding and changing are just as cringey as imaginable. It feels like a bad soap opera (as opposed to a good one, go ahead and show me a good one, I'll wait), so these things are the worst of the worst. Stupid beyond belief. But go on reddit and see the hordes of Spurs and Knicks fans fawning over the game and **gasp** who is going to win the MVP? Maybe Brunson? I don't know, but wouldn't that be great?!!?1! He SOOO deserves an MVP. Then he can be listed among the all-time greats of the game, you know, like whoever won it last year, I guess. :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

So yes, just about the dumbest thing they have ever done. We already know the game is fully commercialized and those of us who grew up loving and playing the game at multiple levels due to the love of the game, can see right through it all. Travesty is what it is. A goddamn travesty on the game.

Bummer, but I have to strenuously disagree with you there fish. It does literally nothing to add to the game. It is a marketing ploy and nothing more. Following right on the heels of the ******** travesty and jr high playground game the all star game has become.

A better way to do this would be to shorten (yes shorten) the season by 10 games, make every game more meaningful to the playoffs and therefore the ultimate outcome of the season.
